Lincoln James is 7 weeks old and is now Fighting for his life in the intensive care unit at a children's hospital in Austin. It is believed that Lincoln contracted a rare neurotoxin, the airborne form of botulism. The CDC has explained that it is more than likely due to living in an agricultural area, as the toxin grows in dirt and can be inhaled by spores simply being in the wind/air. This airborne toxin only truly effects babies under the age of 1 because they do not have the immunity to fight it off like older children and adults do. Lincoln received the anti toxin serum for airborne infant botulism, it was flown in from California approximately 24 hours ago. He is on a respirator and a feeding tube and we are waiting to see if he responds to the anti toxin serum. This bacteria is extremely rare and is not the same as food borne botulism and he did not receive this from ingesting honey before the age of one, he has only had his mother’s breastmilk. It is believed that he breathed in a spore of this bacteria and it causes infants to suddenly react at an alarming rate. The condition causes paralysis and shuts down their ability to breathe on their own. The lab has still not come back with a definite confirmation of infant botulism as it takes weeks to get a result, but due to the nature of how quickly his health deteriorates without the drug, the anti toxin serum Had to be started immediately. He has a large team of wonderful doctors, nurses and staff that have all agreed all signs are pointing to infant botulism, and that is why he is being treated for such. Even after he starts to respond to the medication, which we are praying he will within the next couple of days, his Parents are looking at about 3 weeks in the hospital, possibly longer. We know that if he responds to the serum he can recover from this but it will take some time For his body to slowly heal, it can take weeks to show improvement. Currently he is unable to move his limbs and he is not able to breathe on his own. He is receiving breast milk from a feeding tube as well. This condition is extremely rare occurring but the prognosis is promising, he has a very long road ahead for full recovery. He has a loving mother who is a nurse and a loving father who is an Army Veteran and currently employed as a sheriff's deputy. He has a wonderful older brother named Logan and a very large family who are praying for him on a daily basis. We are asking for support and prayers for our little one.
