Kirstin - Critically Injured Nurse

On January 25th, 2018 Kirstin Berray was the victim of a hit and run car crash involving a drunk driver. The drunk driver was going over 85 mph and veered into her lane, hitting her from behind at speeds of over 65 mph at impact. Kiri was taken to CHI Bergan/Creighton hospital and remained in critical and then critically stable condition in the trauma ICU for 2 weeks. Due to severe brain trauma and swelling caused by the accident, she underwent emergent bilateral skull flap removal surgery (craniectomy) to remove 2 pieces of her skull. She also spent 12 days on a respirator to aid breathing as well as medications to keep her in a medical coma to help her brain heal.
As of 2/8/18, Kirstin was moved to the inpatient wing at CHI Immanuel Rehabilitation Institute. She spends 3 hours a day with Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapists to work on building up mental, physical and cognitive strength and basic functions.
Kirstin, a recent graduate from Clarkson Nursing College and a current RN in the Cardiovasular ICU at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha NE, dedicates each and every day to helping others in similar desperate situations. She works nights and even picks up extra shifts to ensure that her patients have the best care possible. Now she finds herself on the other side of the hospital bed experience and needs your help.
Her recovery will be a long and hard road - spending a minimum of 6 months to 1 year in hospitals and rehab centers. The goal of our fundraising efforts is to help Kirstin with her medical bills and everyday expenses during this journey. Our hope is to alleviate the stress of finances on her and her family while she is not able to return to work. Anything you are able to donate helps to keep Kirstin's family focused on what truly matters- helping her heal. Thank you so much for your love and support!
