As some of you may know, Mom, Joyce Siler, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and major depressive disorder. She received the neuropsychological assessment results from Memorial Hospital here in Hollywood, Florida on Thursday, August 16th. Mom has complained about short term memory loss, forgetfulness, and daily pain in her head for a number of years. Her overall cognitive ability and fine motor skills have been greatly impacted by the Alzheimer's disease.
As a result, the Memorial Hospital Clinical Psychologist (PsyD) recommended that Mom now receive 24/7 supervision and monitoring, a follow up MRI, and aggressive treatment. We have and are exploring treatment options with her referring psychiatrist, primary care physician, neurologist, family members, and many of you who have walked this journey.
We are really sad & heartbroken for Mom and would like to minimize her pain, disorientation, confusion, loss of functioning & progression as much as possible. Alzheimer's disease can be terribly horrific for those affected and their caregivers.
Thus, we would like to have Mom go through the Amen Clinic Memory Rescue Program (https://www.amenclinics.com/memory-rescue-program/). The Amen Clinic notes that, "with the most advanced brain imaging technology and comprehensive evaluation process, we can see what traditional medical practices often miss. By looking at how the brain functions, we’re able to provide a more accurate diagnosis so you can receive a more targeted treatment plan". This program is designed to "eliminate, prevent and treat all of the risk factors that steal your mind". The Amen Clinic will conduct a comprehensive evaluation, do SPECT brain imaging, and develop a targeted treatment plan which addresses all the risk factors.
At this time, we’re estimating costs for the 24/7 support and Amen Clinic work to be approximately $10,000. Our appointments at the Amen Clinic in Atlanta, GA will be in October. As many of you know, I had to retire (disability) in 2012 after myeloma, lupus, and fibromyalgia diagnoses. We have lived on my retirement and our Social Security benefits.
