On 22nd January 2026, Jonathan Townsend was arrested in Thailand and is currently being held in Chiang Mai Central Prison. He is due to face trial on 11th May 2026.

We are raising funds to help ensure Jonathan has access to proper legal representation and translation support. Navigating the Thai legal system is extremely difficult without this help, and having a qualified lawyer and interpreter will allow him to fully understand the process and communicate effectively the events surrounding the incident, in his defence.

We recognise that Jonathan must face the consequences of his actions. However, we believe everyone deserves fair legal representation and the opportunity to be treated justly within the system. At present, his charge papers indicate a sentence of 10–15 years.

He is being charged with theft at night time in a snatch and grab scenario where he took a motorbike from somebody with force at a stop sign.

Jonathan has struggled with severe mental health challenges for some time. While this does not excuse what has happened, those who know him feel this incident is deeply out of character.

He has spent most of the last 13 weeks in a punishment room in isolation. The conditions are extremely challenging with very limited access to natural day light, fresh air and basic hygiene facilities. Food provision is minimal, and he is sleeping on a hard surface without any blankets or pillows.

Our hope is that the lawyer may also be able to extradite him back to the UK to serve some of his sentence here.

Your money will go directly towards his legal fees to his lawyer and to a translator for translation services.
