The Maurice McCabe Whistleblowing Support Fund

‘I’m lucky that I got through my experience but there are many whistleblowers who will struggle without support. Many need legal advice as soon as possible – especially before they report - but often can’t afford it. That’s why I’m asking the public to support Transparency International (TI) Ireland’s appeal to provide free legal advice to whistleblowers‘.

Maurice McCabe and Transparency International (TI) Ireland are asking you to help provide free legal advice to whistleblowers looking to report wrongdoing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the pandemic, we have noticed an increase in calls to TI Ireland from people raising workplace concerns and our small team is now under enormous pressure to meet demand from new clients – especially since we can no longer rely on volunteers to help operate our Speak Up Helpline (1800 844 866).

Many of our clients are exposing everything from fraud to serious risks to children and vulnerable adults. Most of those who contact us have also suffered because they have exposed wrongdoing – with the largest number of clients reporting whistleblowing retaliation coming from our health and community services.

Our goal is to raise €50,000 over the next three months so that there is no delay in giving advice to people who need it – especially those reporting urgent and grave risks to public health and safety.*

All funds raised in the appeal will be invested in providing legal advice from solicitors at the Transparency Legal Advice Centre (TLAC). Referrals to the law centre are managed by TI Ireland’s Speak Up Helpline (1800 844 866), Ireland’s only not-for-profit information and referral service for whistleblowers.

TLAC is Ireland’s only charity delivering this service and it has given free legal advice valued at €900,000 to whistleblowers since it was founded in 2016. This is three times the amount it has cost to operate the centre to date, meaning that every €10 donated allows TLAC solicitors give €30 of free legal advice to whistleblowers.

Your kind donation will be used to provide access to free legal advice to every worker that needs it, irrespective of what they can afford, so that they can feel safe in reporting concerns about wrongdoing before it’s too late.
