My brother, Gord, has been diagnosed with stage 4 Liver disease. His last hospital visit Four weeks ago, he was also diagnosed with Renal failure. He is at this time still in the hospital.
While needing a transplant, complexities in the procedure have Gordon needing to travel with his caregiver sister Charlene, to Toronto, Ontario.
Gord needs 24 hours care. Eight months ago, Gord almost died battling this life altering illness, He currently lives with weekly paracentesis (a needle and tube) to his stomach to drain the fluid that his liver can not process which accumulates in his stomach. This amount varies from 7-17 litres of fluid removed.
Gord has also had to deal with Hepatic encephalopathy which is a decline in brain function that occurs as a result of severe liver disease. With this his liver can't remove toxins from his blood. This causes toxins to build up in the bloodstream, which can lead to brain damage.
Fortunately, we have been able to notice the signs when the toxins are getting too high and we are able to get him into the hospital. His Renal failure requires dialysis every three days and takes 4 hours and sometimes more if he needs to have blood transfusions.
Gord has been hospitalized Five times in the last eight months usually lasting 2-4 weeks each time.
So, many of Gord’s family and friends will get another opportunity to come together and spend time with Gord and his boys (Sean and Cory) before transitioning to what we know will be a successful, though trying, and long recovery period.
On behalf of Gord and his family, I am humbly asking you, to please make a contribution of whatever you can to help Gord and his caregiver make this transplant and recovery a reality. The total amount needed is $3,500.00, based on a 3 week stay in Toronto, ONT. They will be travelling from Winnipeg, MB, which includes the following expenses: Accommodation, Food - Toronto Hotel Accommodation at a hotel that is attached or close to the hospital where the Liver transplant and recovery will occur.
For those that have been asking about how they can help, your prayers for a successful surgery and strength for his family are greatly appreciated.
A GoFundMe me page has also been established for those interested in directly assisting with what will be a mountain of medical and related travel expenses to assist in a successful Liver transplant that will give Gord an opportunity to live out a complete life with his family and friends.
