Ali Pey, the founder and CEO of Ottawa-based startup Message Hopper, was a victim of the Ukrainian airline plane crash that occurred in Iran. He was one of 63 Canadians who lost their lives in this tragic accident.
Ali went to Iran to see his sick father and was returning home to Canada to his wife, Marie Tremblay, and four beautiful daughters when tragedy struck.
Ali is remembered as a beacon of positivity; someone who lit up a room and was enthusiastic about his family, community and everything else he turned his energy towards. This fundraiser is organized by the community in hopes of helping the Pey family out with any expenses they will face as they lay their loved one to rest.
Here are some of the news stories that highlight the type of person Ali was in the community:Tehran crash: 'It was horrible' — Kanata CEO's partner woke up expecting to hear from him Kanata’s tech community mourns the loss of Ottawa startup CEO Ottawa startup CEO Ali Pey named as victim of Ukranian plane crash
Here is an excerpt from The Ottawa Citizen
article that shares a few words from Ali's wife, Marie:
“He said he would text me when he landed in Kyiv. I woke up in the middle of the night and didn’t have a text. I knew something was wrong.”
The two had spoken just 45 minutes before Pey’s plane —Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752 — was scheduled to leave Tehran on Tuesday night.
“We were joking and having fun and saying how we couldn’t wait for him to come home. We were being silly and then we said goodbye.”
After speaking with him, Tremblay put flight-tracking information on her phone to follow the progress of Pey’s flights between Tehran and Toronto by way of Kyiv. She noticed the flight was slightly delayed leaving.
Pey was on his way home from a week-long visit to his ailing father in Iran.
Since he had promised to text her from Kyiv, Tremblay woke up and looked at her phone in the middle of the night.
When there was no text, she checked the flight and saw with growing alarm that the flight information wasn’t updating.
Within minutes she learned why: Numerous news stories described the crash after takeoff from Tehran and confirmed that none of the 176 passengers on board had survived. Pey’s sister phoned soon after.
This week, grieving friends and family filed into the Ottawa home the two shared with four daughters — two from each of their previous relationships — to offer condolences and support.

Who will withdraw the funds? How will they get to the Pey family outside of GoFundMe?
I will be adding Ali's wife, Marie, as a team member to this campaign and making her the beneficiary of the funds. They will be withdrawn directly to Marie and I, nor L-SPARK, will play a role in that withdrawal process.
