Dear Family and Friends,
Donna and I continue to be humbled at the ongoing support we have received from friends and family all over the country during Donna’s hospital stay. Donna was recently transferred to a specialty hospital in Erie, PA! However, this transfer comes with a financial need. Early on in this process, we knew that the medical expenses incurred during this trial would be a uniquely heavy burden. We want to thank the many of you who have already contributed to help us during this challenging situation. All of the funds contributed so far have been used to cover some temporary lodging costs and medical costs the details of which follow.
A year ago, we were faced with the decision of choosing the right health care plan for our needs. As you know, a variety of plans are currently on the market, and every one has pros and cons associated with each. After carefully weighing our options, we elected to pursue a Christian non-profit that subscribes to the practice of medical bill “sharing.” This is not insurance, but rather, a group of believers in Jesus Christ who agree to share their medical bills with one another.
This non-profit company has Christian values and a “bearing one another’s burdens” philosophy which we wanted to align ourselves with as a couple. As you can imagine, this unique business model requires a unique set of policies in order to protect the longevity of such an important ministry. One such policy is to not share bills which are a result of pre-existing conditions. Unfortunately, while trying to transfer Donna to Select Hospital in Erie, PA we were informed that Donna’s condition is considered pre-existing and they will not approve any current bills nor any future bills for sharing with the membership. We don’t agree with this and will be appealing this decision. We still have a couple of other options to explore regarding payment for the extensive hospital bills incurred so far.
The more immediate consequence of this decision however, is that Select would not accept Donna unless we made arrangements to prepay for 14 days of her stay at the hospital which amounted to a cost of $28,000.
Believing that Select offers Donna the best and most efficient opportunity to get better, and believing Donna was not progressing the way she needed in a hospital system that wasn’t equipped to provide the rehab care she needed, we stepped out by faith. By pooling personal funds and donations from friends and family, we paid for the first two weeks yesterday and Donna has moved to Select Hospital in Erie today.
After much prayer and consideration, we have decided to be transparent about this specific financial need we are facing. We are coming to you asking for help to defray the costs of ongoing care for Donna and the costs which may yet be demanded up front. The appeal process regarding ruling Donna’s case as a pre-existing condition will take time, but Donna’s need for care is immediate.
If after reading this plea, you do feel compelled to give, we would simply ask a couple of things from you. First, please only consider giving if you have carefully considered the matter before God in prayer. Second, please do not put our needs above the needs of your local church body. Third, please do not give if you are already facing debt you are unable to pay.
