Support for Don Watt

Donation protected
Don Watt has given an impressive 35 years of his life serving as the head athletic trainer for the Chadron State Eagles, University of Arkansas at Monticello , and Jenks High school. Don has been surrogate mother and father to athletes away from home during times of transition and crisis and medical liaison between health practitioners and families and coaching staff. Don has given the most valuable thing any one person can ever give to another human and that is compassion. Now Don needs our help.

Don had scheduled surgery Tuesday, August 21st at Swedish Hospital in Denver to repair a few things with his esophagus and stomach. Out-patient surgery went well, he felt great, and his check up was spot on so he and Jana made the trip back home to Chadron Wednesday. Thursday he wasn’t feeling great, had some pain, but didn’t over think it. By Friday morning he was lethargic and barely making sense. Jana could barely get him to respond to her but somehow got him to the car and off to the ER in Chadron they went.

His vitals were awful. His labs worse. He was septic. His veins were so bad they had to place a central line. He was completely unstable. The decision to fly him back to Swedish Hospital was made quickly.

Once there, he went straight to the operating room where a “leak” was found and corrected.  He had to be intubated and sedated overnight and finally the next day he had stabilized enough to have it removed.  He is on heavy hitting antibiotics to keep battling the infection resulting from the leak.  His kidneys are slowly regaining function.

He is incredibly sick but has already made incredible gains. He will continue to recover at Swedish Medical Center with Jana by his side.

He is definitely the strongest man I know and has a great support system rallying behind him. Please continue to keep him in your prayers as he still has a long road ahead of him!

Between the flight for life, ICU stay, and anticipated rehabilitation Don and Jana deserve to be shown as much love and support as they have shown to athletes, friends, coaches, and the many other lives they have touched through the years. They would appreciate any help you could spare.
