Christopher Burkett, my nephew, was a bright light in our family. He was known to many as Chris "Red" Burkett, and he touched the lives of everyone around him. Sadly, Chris lost his battle with mental health and ended his life last night. Our hearts are broken, and our family is devastated. Too often, men keep everything bottled up because they've been told to "man up," "push through it," or "bury it deep and forget about it." They stay silent because they feel like no one cares or no one wants to listen. From personal experience, I can tell you that burying those feelings may seem to work for a little while, but eventually they come back. Ignoring the pain doesn't make it disappear.

 If there's one thing I hope comes from sharing this, it's that someone who is struggling realizes they are not alone. If you're one of my friends, family members, or even someone who just knows me through Facebook, and you've ever thought about ending your life, please reach out. Call me. Message me. I don't care what time it is or what I'm doing. I would rather lose sleep and help you through your darkest moment than wake up to the news that you thought you had no one to talk to. Your life matters. You matter. There is always someone who cares, and I promise I'll be one of those people. Please check on the men in your life. Sometimes the strongest smile hides the deepest pain. A simple conversation could save a life.
