<div>She leaves behind a 2-year-old son who won’t remember her voice or the warmth of her hugs. She was a committed mother, doing what she could to raise her son with the little she had. He was there when his mother was killed. He was found covered in blood, crying. He’s still asking for her.

<div>This is a tragedy years in the making. There are many people to blame — from the man who killed her to the state who should’ve incarcerated him years ago. Where do I begin?

<div>We are the Familia Funes. We met Brenda when she first came to the U.S. because her ex — the man we believe killed her — is our cousin, William Funes. For years, we knew something was wrong with him. He would terrorize his little cousins. He attacked another ex. Then, in 2022, we truly understood how much of a monster he was.

<div>His son was 2 weeks old when he was admitted to NYU Winthrop for severe injuries. He had a broken leg. The doctors said it could've been an accident, so he was returned home. Then, two and a half months later, the baby returned to the hospital. This time, with a skull fracture, hemorrhaging in his eye and brain, a broken rib, and a broken finger.

<div>We believe William, his father, was responsible for this.

<div>At this point, the state removed the baby from his parents’ care. That’s when Rebecca Flores stepped in. No baby should have to enter the foster system if there’s family who can care for them.

<div>At the time of the baby’s injuries, Rebecca had only her now 10-year-old daughter. She had been trying for years to have a baby, and it felt like a sign to at least do what she could to help while filling the hole in my own heart. He stayed with Rebecca and her family for a little over a year.

<div>Then, he returned with his mom. His father was forbidden from seeing him. The state had no clear evidence that those injuries came from him. He should’ve been put behind bars. We're still angry that more wasn’t done. Rebecca spent months fighting with the court demanding they do more. Now, he’s done something worse. He’s killed someone and left his son an orphan. He remains at large. The police are still looking for him. We’re scared as we don’t know where he’ll go next.

<div>We are heartbroken about what he’s done. He’s still on the run, and we’re scared. We want him behind bars. Now, his son is back with Rebecca. We are glad he’s safe and happy to care for him, but Rebecca wasn’t prepared for this. Financially. Emotionally. Unprepared. We don’t know yet what the state will decide and if they’ll leave him in our care.

<div><strong>We need help — to care for a child we weren’t prepared for.</strong> Any little bit helps. Even $5. The baby has a life ahead of him. We want to give him the mental health support he’ll need and to ensure he can return to El Salvador and visit his mom when the time comes. If the state decides he cannot stay with us, we want to be able to give him something so that when he’s 18, he has financial security. He’ll always have our love, but love won’t be enough to keep him safe.
