Reverend Doctor E. Bonnie Devlin, AKA Bon Bon, Rev Dev or Doctor Boom as many of us who know and love her call her, is one of a kind. She is a mixture of super intelligence and massive heart centeredness; a Minister who gives selflessly of her time and energy to help those in need. She is a brilliant scholar, a world class drum master, a natural teacher, a spiritual leader, and one of the people whom I value and respect most in the world. She has helped so many of us with her profound ability to be present for the joys and suffering of others... and now she needs our help.
Bonnie has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and due to the nature of the health insurance situation in our world, she not only has to manage the shock and impact of the diagnosis, but has to jump through hoops and spend hours on hold with institutions who are interested in where she is going to get the money to pay them to save her life. It is an unjust circumstance, but Bonnie has the heart of a warrior and is putting her New Jersey upbringing to good use; reaching into the depths of her core strength to muster the fortitude it takes to fight for her own life and get the care she needs.
Many loving people have expressed a desire to know what's happening and to know what they can do to support Bonnie at this challenging time. She only has so much energy at the moment and every ounce of it is going into picking up her sword and marching headlong into this battle. She has expressed sadness at not being able to get back to everyone and give them what they may need; still putting others first, but this is only about the rest of us in that we need to rally around her now and get her well.
It it seems to me that the most direct and effective way to support Bon Bon right now is to let our hearts reach into our pockets and begin to raise the funds she will need to accomplish the surgery she needs to remove this scourge from her body and get on with sharing her gifts with the world.
Whatever you can give is welcomed and appreciated, every penny will help. Money, in this circumstance, is a symbolic expression of your humanity and impulse towards basic compassion, and whether or not you know Bonnie Devlin personally, I do, and what I know is that some people are put on this planet to make a difference and Bon Bon is one of those special people.
She will, with all of our help, conquer this challenge, and when she does she will reemerge into the world stronger, wiser and more impactful then before. She will take this experience and turn it into something that will eventually help all of us, of this I am certain.
