Hello everyone. I am writing on behalf of the Somnis Family. Robert (Bob) Somnis was involved in a motorcycle vs deer accident on State Line Road yesterday morning (5/30/2024). He was found by a passing vehicle and taken to Albert Lea's Mayo and quickly airlifted to Rochester Mayo. He is in critical condition at this time. He has 2 skull fractures, Bleeding on the brain, Borken Collar Bone, broken shoulder blade on the right side, ribs all crushed on the right side. collapsed lung, broken right hip, 3 broken toes on his right foot, a small laceration on his liver, and lots of road rash. They are waiting to see if his neck is broken and he currently has a chest tube in.
Bob will have several surgeries ahead of him which include plates to replace his broken ribs. For today they are just hoping that his chest tube comes out and they are able to communicate with him.
For anyone who knows Bob he is a lively spirit and loves his family and motorcycling. He has a very long road ahead of him and lots of medical expenses and family expenses that he will not be able to take care of. Cheryl (his wife) and Bob have three grown children and 3 young adopted children. The three adopted kids are currently in their care and have special needs of their own, with one being Downs Syndrome. Cheryl generally is the one running the kids to their appointments while Bob is working to pay the bills. This accident is going to put a huge bind on their household.
Right now Cheryl is commuting to and from Rochester to spend time with Bob and make sure he has the care he needs. They reside in Freeborn, Mn with their three small kids. Anything you can do to help them out, prayers or financially, would be very much appreciated.
The family is in shock and just working to get through each day.
Update 6-1-2024

Today Robert continues to be stable. He is sedated and given several of meds for pain. He has lots of drainage coming from his lungs which is this main reason they have kept the breathing tube in. The goal is to get the fluid out of his lungs as quickly as possible. Tomorrow the doctors are optimistic they may be able to remove the chest and breathing tube. The doctors have said la today that Bob has a TBI (traumatic brain injury). They are not sure of the extent of it until they are able to communicate with him. He has times where he does respond to yes and no questions by a small nod of his head or will roll his eyes at the questions asked. He has some damage to his left eye which will require additional testing. Right now they are trying to keep him as comfortable as possible to allow his body some much needed rest and healing time. Please continue to send prayers for healing and comfort.
Update 6-2-2024

Cheryl was able to see Robert’s bike last night on her way home from the hospital. Based on the condition of the bike the deer more than likely hit him head on with the front of the bike. ( deer was dead at the scene)

This morning doctors are continuing to pull fluids from his lungs. One the majority of the fluids are removed hopefully the tubing will come out and communication with him can start. He has a care team with him in his room constantly monitoring his vitals and drainage which gives the family some peace knowing he has constant care. As the day progresses and more is known, updates will be added.
The outpouring of love, prayers, and support is such a blessing to the family right now. They cannot thank you enough.
