Support for Baby London

Our Friends Cody and Jade have had quite the whirl wind. Jade has been in the hospital on bedrest with complications of her pregnancy and then October 25, 2017 Jade delivered a sweet baby girl, London Mirielle McConnell at just 23 weeks and 5 days. London weighed in at a teeny 1 pound 2 ounces. She is truly their miracle baby. London is a fighter and we pray for her every day! Jade and Cody have quite the road ahead of them to support Baby London. They already have 2 young children at home, and will be commuting every day from Langley to Surrey Memorial NICU for the next several months to be with London. This comes with a lot of unexpected expenses for our friends. Jade is pumping breast milk which will need to be frozen and brought to London as needed so it would be nice to help ease the costs of gas, parking, on the go meals, any supplies needed for baby London and even help pay babysitting costs so Cody and Jade can have help with Ayla and Kashton as well. Let's all help Cody and Jade in their emotional journey with Miss London. Below is more detail of Jade's story.

...It was the same morning as every other morning. I woke up in the hospital, brushed my teeth, ate breakfast, and awaited my morning visitors. I always tried to have a visit with a friend or family at least once a day so I wouldn’t go crazy!

Today was extra special because I was having two of my besties come visit with their newborn baby girls!! Also, that evening we were going to celebrate my hubby’s birthday because I bought him Canucks tickets for his actual birthday on October 26th so I wasn’t going to see him. I had a cake and everything all ready for him in the fridge so when him and the kids came later on we would have cake and celebrate!

On Wednesday morning when going to the bathroom I noticed a few drops of fresh blood. I was to always warn the nurses if I saw fresh blood and not just pinkish fluid as per usual. When the nurses and doctors came to do their usual round in the morning, I told them about this blood. The Doctor then told the nurses to hook me up to an NST (non stress test machine) so they could monitor the baby. I sat with my girlfriends and cuddled their babies as the nurses prepared my test. When my friends left and the test began I started to have contractions. I had one, then another, and another. I was getting worried. They were 8-11 minutes apart and pretty strong. I called Cody to get to the hospital. He came right away. The Doctor then told the nurses to hook me up to an IV to start a magnesium drip so that if the baby came this would help her brain development.

It didn’t feel real. How could this be happening. Cody stayed for awhile but the contractions stopped and the magnesium was making me very tired. I told him to leave and go across the street to the mall while I rested.

I slept for an hour and a half then woke up. I hadn’t had any contractions on the machine so I called Cody and told him it was fine to leave and to go pick up Ayla from school. About 45 minutes later I had an intense sharp stabbing pain in my side that lasted for about 5 minutes straight. It hurt so bad I could hardly talk. The nurses looked at my pad and it was full of blood. They called the doctor in immediately. She looked at the NST monitor and could see London’s heart rate was decelerating. She immediately said I was having a placental abruption and if we wanted to save baby we were doing a c section right away!

I couldn’t believe it, I started crying and within 30 seconds the OR team was in my room prepping me for surgery. I asked if we had time to wait until my husband got here and they told me if I wanted to save her then no. I texted Cody at 5:25 “Get here now. C section!” And he replied “Leaving now”.

They quickly went over a list of questions as they prepped me for surgery. “Do you have any bobby pins in? Jewellery? Dentures? Nail polish?” I gave them my jewellery and they wheeled me into the OR room. Immediately the doctor came in to give me the spinal. By this time I was crying and terrified. I was all alone. I didn’t know if my baby was going to be healthy.
I just couldn’t believe this was all happening. She gave me the spinal and then they laid me on the table and scrubbed my belly down with iodine, shaved me and turned me almost upside down on the bed so the freezing would rush to my belly. They put the curtain up and started surgery. I had one nurse by my head who was talking me through everything, within minutes the baby was out and they told me it was a boy. I was so confused but I didn’t even care- I just wanted to know if my baby was healthy. I told her it was supposed to be a girl and she said that the cord was in between the legs so she thought boy, but they took the baby so fast, she wasn’t sure. They told me the baby made a small noise when she came out but she was being worked on by 10 doctors and nurses in the room beside me. All of the sudden a nurse came in the OR room and said my husband had arrived and asked if he was allowed to come in. They said yes and he came in dressed in his scrubs. We both started crying and he sat beside my head and asked me if everything was okay. I told him she was already born and he asked if she was okay but nobody knew yet.

It was the hardest part waiting until a neonatologist came and said she was stabilized and my husband could go with him to meet her. I told him to take my phone so he could get pictures, I was dying to see what she looked like!! He came back and showed me photos of her and she was so perfect. At 6:08 pm, October 25th, our lives changed forever. It was the scariest moment of our lives but it couldn’t have worked out better.
