Support for Amiel

Arlene is an amazing example of the Canadian dream. She came to Canada over 10 years-ago in search of a better opportunity for her family – more specifically for her son Amiel (Justin). For years, Arlene worked as a nanny here in Toronto and has cared for many children. Not only has she become a “second mom” to all of these kids, but she also became part of their families and is beloved by both those children she cared for, and her employers who quickly became her friends. Indeed, she has often sat around the table with her employers – even years after she had moved on to other jobs. Arlene is an incredible woman. All of us who know her would say that they have never met a more caring, protective “momma bear” – a cheerful soul, full of life and happiness.

But as much as she cared for our families, she loved hers the most. With hard work and great discipline, she built a network of good friends, a safe place to live and an amazing life here in Canada in preparation of her son’s arrival. Arlene’s dreams came to light this year when she became a Canadian citizen and she was finally able to bring Amiel to Canada to begin his new life here.  She was so proud to become a Canadian and so happy to finally have her son with her. Her life-long dreams were accomplished!!!

Unfortunately, last week Arlene underwent what was supposed to be a routine day surgery. There were complications following the surgery, and Arlene was re-admitted to the hospital shortly thereafter. Sadly, Arlene went for a long time without oxygen and suffered cardiac arrest.  Arlene was placed on life support and, tragically, passed away this week.

This is a terrible loss to Arlene’s family in the Philippines and her network of friends in Canada, but is an absolutely devastating loss for her son Amiel. With the loss of his mother, Amiel has no family in Canada.  He is also seeking to enroll in post-secondary school this year. The loss of his mother is immeasurable; however the impending financial implications on Amiel will be a big setback for both Amiel and his mother’s dream for him. We want to afford Amiel the opportunity to get on his feet here in Canada; something his mother sacrificed so much to achieve for him. He is such an intelligent, caring young man and he has a lot to offer this country.

This is an extremely hard story, one that would break your heart even more if you knew what a selfless, beautiful soul Arlene was, and what an intelligent, kind young man Amiel is. Those who knew her are absolutely devastated.

Please consider supporting us in helping ensure that Amiel can continue the legacy his mother has been building for him. Please help us reduce the burden from this absolute and gut-wrenching tragedy. We need to protect the life Arlene sacrificed so much for!

All proceeds will go towards supporting Amiel with the necessities he needs (e.g. immediate expenses and longer-term expenses such as school tuition, etc.) and expenses arising as a result of Arlene’s passing (e.g., funeral costs and expenses, repatriation of Arlene to the Philippines and a flight for Amiel to accompany her and return to Canada).
