Support for Ada and The LaMaster Family

Ada LaMaster is a self-described “normal 12 year-old kid.”  We would say she was a pretty extraordinary 12-year old kid, an avid skier and fearless rock climber.  This was indeed the case until bedtime on January 3 when Ada complained of shoulder pain. Her parents, Steve and Rachelle, assumed it was nothing serious and probably from the skiing she had done that day. Nine hours later Ada awoke with no feeling from her sternum down.

After being seen at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME, Ada was transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), close to her home in Cambridge, MA. At MGH she spent 2.5 weeks being tested for all potential causes of her sudden paralysis. Ada and her parents finally received a diagnosis: Transverse Myelitis (TM). TM is a very rare inflammatory disease causing damage to the spinal cord. Ada is now at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, MA, where she is learning to adapt to her new circumstances, and hoping to regain some sensation in her core and legs.  A TM diagnosis is marked by an uncertain prognosis,  and improvement can take months to years.

The plan is to discharge Ada home in the coming weeks. However, there are several steps to enter the house, and Ada’s bedroom and the only bathroom are on the 2nd floor. As such, Ada’s home is inaccessible to her. This is the only home that Ada has known. Because of the proximity to school, family, friends, and church Ada hopes to return home to the house and neighborhood where she has grown up and has a huge support system.

In order to return home, Ada’s house will need a ramp, a small bathroom on the first floor, a stair lift to get to the second floor, and accessibility modifications to the bathroom on the second floor. These renovations are estimated to cost close to $100,000.  Ada’s parents, Steve and Rachelle have full-time jobs in social services.  While Steve is back to work part-time, Rachelle has had to take an unpaid leave of absence to care and advocate for Ada.  Simply, the LaMasters need some financial help to help them adjust to their new lives.

These funds will be instrumental in ensuring that Ada can return to her family home, remain in her school and continue to thrive in her close-knit neighborhood community.  We are hoping you can help ease the burden of recent events and help get Ada home.
