Support the ESEA Community Fund: Stop Asian Hate

Tax deductible
What do we mean by ESEA hate?

The acronym ESEA refers to individuals of East and Southeast Asian descent in the UK.

Members of the UK’s ESEA communities are enduring physical and verbal attacks and increased incidents of hostility. This is predicted to get worse as the lockdown lifts.

Why should you donate?

Figures from the Metropolitan Police show a 179% increase in hate crime around the start of the UK lockdown compared to the same period in the previous year, and campaign group besea.n (Britain’s East and Southeast Asian Network) has reported similar increases have occurred throughout the country.

In the US, we’ve seen a surge of heartbreaking violence towards Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). But this uptick is not limited to the US: from an increase in racially motivated attacks against ESEA people to the staggering COVID-19 death toll amongst Filipino health and social care workers we need to ensure communities in the UK are protected too.

Activists believe many hate incidents go unreported and the organisations benefiting from this fund are seen as safe spaces for those at risk of attack. A recent poll  found Chinese people in the UK are the most common victims of racial slurs.

Who benefits from your donation?

This is a campaign for all four nations in the UK, and across the community. Donations will support organisations that empower and uplift the community to be announced as soon as possible.

The aim is to mobilise a coalition of organisations across the UK to campaign against hate and fund and foster a grassroots network, as well as work on specific projects to help the ESEA community in the UK.

We will continue to keep donors updated.

So how does this work?

This is the first such project in the UK and is inspired by by GoFundMe.org’s ‘AAPI Community Fund’ campaign in the US. Anyone can nominate an organisation, and our steering group will decide if they should be put forward to receive a grant. Our executive director will then present them to the trustees, who will make the final announcement. Organisations will be announced as soon as possible. You can contact gofundme.org.uk via the message button on this page if you want your organisation to be considered.

Together, it is our responsibility to condemn this and create lasting social change.

The Support ESEA Community Fund aims to do just that, addressing the urgent issues that the community faces, as well as broader, systemic problems, which have flourished within a political climate that has normalised and enabled anti-ESEA racism. With the donations received through the Fund, GoFundMe.org.uk will issue grants to trusted organisations working to rectify the racial inequalities in our society.
