About Erick
Erick Kabendera is an award-winning freelance Tanzanian investigative journalist who specializes in politics, mining and energy.
On 29th July 2019, he was taken from his home by security officials and later arrested and charged with unbailable offences.
The case has been widely reported on by international media.
Meanwhile, Erick’s family are suffering as a direct result of his extended pre-trial detention.
It is common across East Africa for high-earning family members to support unemployed or low-wage workers in their immediate and extended family. Erick’s work was the main source of income for his family and in-laws, who have now been without these means for nearly 6 months.
This fund has been established to help Kabendera family at this difficult time.
All money raised will go directly to Erick’s family, who face mounting legal costs and medical expenses for Erick, as well as their own day-to-day living costs, including food, water, school fees, debts and the cost of traveling daily to visit Erick in prison and bring him food.
This has be further been worsened by unforeseen expenses, such as the funeral of Erick’s mother and transportation of her body home for burial.
Although friends and relatives continue to support the family with ad hoc contributions, the lack of a regular, sustained income is causing enormous stress to Erick’s relatives and has placed them in a precarious financial position.

Erick has been a journalist for 15 years. His reporting is highly respected both in Tanzania and internationally and he has worked with many respected organizations, including: The Times of London, The Independent, The New African, Africa Report, Africa Confidential, IPS Africa, Al Jazeera Africa, The Guardian, The Observer, African Arguments and The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
He has won acclaims and awards for his work, including: Excellence in Reporting on Sexual and Reproductive Health (U.S. Population Reference Bureau); Sexuality Journalism Award (African Population and Health Research Centre); United Nations Dag Hammarskjold Fellowship; David Astor Journalism Award; and Tanzanian Media Fund Rural Reporting Fellowship.
