Erica, Coby and Willow have lost their beloved partner and father far too soon. They've been left with many unexpected expenses, as you might imagine. On Thursday, September 21st, Mark Shepard collapsed in his classroom. He was taken to the ER and a tumor was detected. Mark underwent brain surgery on Wednesday, September 27th. He came out of the surgery with a dire diagnosis of glioblastoma -- the worst kind of brain cancer. He was discharged with hope that he'd have up to 14 months to live, but complications occurred almost immediately, and he left us on Saturday September 30th. All of this occurred within two weeks of the initial signs of illness.
Mark was in peace as he left this world. He lost brain function and became unresponsive. Erica spent a night caring for him as his body slowly shut down.
Mark was a loving partner and father. He and Erica were about to celebrate their 15th anniversary together, and were building a life and a future for their young children. Mark was a teacher at Challenger School, where he had the opportunity to exercise his passion for education, exhibiting patience, kindness, good humor and respect. Mark had truly found his home at Challenger School, and had the utmost love and respect for its students, staff, and community.
