<div>My name is Emily Tomlin and I am an artist. I graduated from Texas State University in San Marcos, TX – Class of 2012. I majored in Fine Arts &amp; Communications and graduated with a 3.8 GPA and honors.

<div><strong>I am raising funds to pay for art supplies, booth display equipment, and to cover my income for a month so that I can create art to feature in my very 1st art show.</strong>

<div>I have owned and operated small businesses in the fitness and restaurant industry for over 10 years. After a difficult divorce, I decided it was time to begin again, but this time doing what I love on my own.

<div>Growing up, I would watch my mom create &amp; paint in admiration. I wanted to be just like her, an amazing mother &amp; artist.
</div>

<div>Art is something I’ve always implemented into my businesses. It’s a skill that brings value to any job I’ve ever had. Creating something out of nothing is truly my favorite thing to do. If you want to be an artist and someone gives you the “starving artist” line or says “you will never make any money,” don’t listen. Give yourself time to figure it out.

<div>I realized on this journey that my mental illness is my greatest strength and also my biggest downfall when it comes to art. It held me back and made me have low self-esteem. It made me start projects and never finish them. It made me believe I was not good enough. But it also is my gift. Bipolar disorder is more common than you would think, and many go untreated. After diagnosis, I researched and found many names of famous actors, artists, and singers/rappers who have the same illness... this was empowering information and it made me feel less like a person with a disability and more like someone with a superpower.

<div>Bipolar disorder allows you to feel the most extreme levels of emotion. You hurt and love harder than others, your imagination is wild &amp; your heart is heavy with depression a lot of the time. Finding a creative outlet is key for survival for many who it burdens.

<div>Being treated, things are different. The negative thoughts and emotions are gone, but I still get to tap into that creativity that my mental illness gave me, and for that, I am grateful.
</div>
