<div>In August 2024, Ed Rivas, a dedicated nurse for over 15 years, contracted MRSA, a serious and contagious bacterial infection, in his left foot. MRSA is known for its resistance to several antibiotics and can lead to severe complications, including sepsis (infection of the blood). Despite aggressive treatment with multiple intravenous antibiotics, the infection continued to spread rapidly. The doctor stated, “This is a flesh-eating bacteria that we can’t stop.” After undergoing three surgeries within the first seven days which included amputations of his toes and grafting of his foot, the MRSA continued to spread to the bone. It was then evident that the foot could not be saved and that the only way to stop the infection was to amputate his left leg below the knee.

<div>This decision was necessary to save his life, but it means that Ed faces a long and challenging recovery process. His treatment and rehabilitation will take many months, and the adjustment to his new circumstances—both mentally and physically—will be significant. This situation has also impacted his ability to support his family.

<div>The funds raised will be used to cover Ed’s ongoing treatment and medical equipment needs. We are hopeful that he will eventually be a candidate for a prosthesis, though we know this will take some time. Ed has always been generous in helping others, both personally and professionally. Any contributions to his care are deeply appreciated. We are truly grateful for your sharing this with anyone who has been touched by Ed’s life and kindness.
