The Johnson – Lynge family in partnership with the University of Washington Surgery Department are raising funds in memory of Dr Dana Christian Lynge who passed in June of this year.

Dana laid the foundation for the UW-Billings Clinic Rural Surgery Track, galvanized a coalition for its operationalization, obtained 0.5 FTE administrative support for the

program and its trainees, and secured a partner for clinical training (Billings Clinic). He successfully negotiated the funding for the first year of the training program between UW and Billings Clinic.

Dana was working on a longitudinal curriculum that would be incorporated into all years of residency and be denser during the 2 years of the UW-Billings Clinic Rural Surgery Track.

Dana's colleagues intend to pick up where he left off and ensure that this becomes a living component of rural surgery education in our department. The funding gap that Dana was working to address was that for the salary, benefits, travel, tuition, and research stipend for residents in the second year of the program. Additionally, he hoped to fund a program lead position to recruit trainees, lead evaluation initiatives, coordinate and participate in rural surgery research, and maintain the curriculum.

Dana’s pragmatic approach toward building partnerships, training and advanced education, and mentorship was refreshing and has set the tone for the program indelibly.
