<div>I stood up too fast to move laundry and the top of my head slammed into the metal door. I felt okay, so we iced it and kept watching TV.

<div>Two hours later my whole body turned to static. My eyesight went. I called out for my partner and my voice glitched. For about twenty seconds I couldn't move or speak. I was locked out of my own body.

<div>We rushed to the ER. I passed out in the hallway and threw up three times in the car. On the way there, more scared than I'd ever been, I started reciting my own lyrics in the dark. I just wanted to know my brain could still hold the thing that made me me. It could. Barely. But it could.

<div>They said it was a Traumatic brain injury. They sent us home, and that's when the hard part actually started.

<div>I didn't leave my bed for three weeks. Some mornings I woke up and didn't know who I was, so I scrolled through photos of myself to remember. For months I couldn't look at a screen. Couldn't work. Couldn't make anything. Ten weeks of vestibular therapy, three times a day. Brain scans every month. And the bills kept stacking the whole time I was down.

<div>I've built my whole life around words. I move fast because slowing down has always scared me. But I couldn't spiral this time, I didn't have room to. So I meditated whenever I could and let myself sit in it. For the first time in years, I took a long pause.
