<div>D Scott Fritchen is facing a sudden and life-threatening medical emergency. After waking up with unexpected chest pains, he was life flighted to KU Med for major heart surgery. Doctors diagnosed him with aortic dissection, a condition caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease that results in a tear in the inner layer of the body's main artery. This is a critical situation, and the road ahead will be challenging.

<div>I had that moment today laying in the hospital. I asked one of my doctors, “So…what really happened?” The doctor looked up at me. He said, “Sir, you died and were brought back to life.” And that put it into perspective. I still don’t remember much of the past week. But I’m grateful.
