Supporting Cystic Fibrosis patients

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that affects primarily the lungs and the digestive system. The person that suffers from CF receives two defective genes, one from each parent. The mutations coming from these genes are the cause of the condition. Until now, scientists have detected over 1,900 different mutations. That is why each patient presents different symptoms, some being more severe than others.

Generally, the first test used to diagnosticate Cystic Fibrosis is through the analysis of the person’s chloride, to measure the amount of salt on it. However, all cases require to be complemented with a genetic study for a more precise diagnostic.

In many countries, the genetic study its done as part of a routine practice or a method for early detection of the disease. Currently, in Venezuela only one analysis is done, with which you can detect the 45 most frequent mutations. In most cases this analysis is not enough, that is why is so important to improve and enlarge the extent of the analysis.

Andrea Zapata Foundation,  is a non-profit organization whose objective is to extend a hand to people that suffer from Cystic Fibrosis, especially those who live in Venezuela. In alliance with Laboratorio InmunoXXI and Fundacion Unidos Respiramos Futuro, we will carry out a special procedure to get blood sample for 33 patients with Cystic Fibrosis who are treated at the Ciudad Hospitalaria Dr. “Enrique Tejera” in the city of Valencia in the state of Carabobo.

Laboratorio InmunoXXI, is an organization located in Venezuela with a high trajectory on the realization of clinical tests and intermediary on international medical exams. The laboratory will take the blood tests, analyze them, and packed the samples without any charge. They will follow all biosafety protocols for transferring biological samples of the IATA, and will be responsible for all the migration procedures in Venezuela and in the United States. The objective is to deliver them to Mayo Clinic located in Rochester, MN. Finally, deliver the results to the patient in approximately 10 days after the test has been done.

This significant action will benefit 33 venezuelans to have access the best technology and medical supply. The new medical treatments are oriented towards the type of mutation the patient posses, which have shown  improvements of the lung function and decreases on the respiratory exacerbations and enhancing their life quality.

We  are deeply thankful with the laboratory Laboratorio InmunoXXI and the foundation Fundación Unidos Respiramos Futuro for joining this cause and for their commitment with Venezuela. And we thank you, because with your support you are providing  these people with a longer and better life.

With the money we collect, thanks to you, we will pay for each patient’s genetic study  ($204 per person) and all the expenses related with the transfer and shipping to the United States. We need to collect a total of $6,732 to positively impact the 33 patients we have in Venezuela.

Thanks to your contribution we will make it possible!
