<div><strong>In June, my mother, Lemonia Schuler, was diagnosed with cervical cancer, which spread aggressively within just weeks.</strong> After multiple flight delays and cancellations, I finally arrived in Athens and made it to her side on her last day. I was able to hold her hand, love on her, and be with her until she passed later that day. My younger brother <strong>George, who had flown in from the U.S., sadly arrived too late to say goodbye.</strong>

<div><strong>Just four days later</strong>, on the morning of her funeral, tragedy struck again. We were preparing to take our mother on a five-hour ferry ride from Piraeus to her home island of Ikaria, followed by a drive up the mountain to the village of Frandato, where she was born. <strong>Mere hours before we were set to depart, George suffered a severe seizure in our hotel lobby. He fell, sustaining a traumatic brain injury that required immediate emergency care.</strong> Doctors had to induce a coma to control the intense pressure and swelling in his brain, performing surgery to relieve the edema and stabilize him. I was forced to make a heart-wrenching decision—to leave my brother in the hospital and continue the journey to fulfill our mother’s final wish for her burial.

<div><strong>George has spent the past four months in an Athens hospital, fighting through an incredibly challenging recovery. </strong>I recently returned to Athens to be by his side for the first time since his accident, and the trauma he’s endured is severe. Despite this, he and I are reconnecting—I bring him treats and magazines, and we talk, laugh, and try to hold onto some sense of normalcy. <strong>But his physical and cognitive struggles are profound</strong>. He can barely walk and struggles with memory loss, often forgetting what has happened.<strong> I’ve tried to tell him about our mother’s passing, but he still doesn’t fully understand or remember.</strong>

<div>He will need extensive physical therapy and ongoing care. My goal is to bring him home from Athens to Nevada, but I have no idea how to manage this when he can barely walk. He has no insurance, and every cost so far has been out-of-pocket, making this an almost impossible challenge to face alone. <strong>The goal is to cover his medical expense so far and bring him home.</strong>

<div><strong>George urgently needs a bone graft surgery to protect his skull, as well as continued rehabilitation to help him recover</strong>. We are doing everything we can to bring him home to the United States, but the costs are beyond what our family can manage.
