My name is Bree Nieves and I am a Filipina and Boricua writer and director working towards my M.A. in Film and Television Directing from the MET Film School London. You can find out more about me and my work here.
As a child from a mixed race family, my work is centered around my experiences as a second-generation woman of color living in the U.S. I am currently working on a short film that will serve as my master’s thesis: Comet: A Slice of Life.

This film is about a 17-year old girl, Ofelía (Felí), living in a small conservative town in the protestant bible-belt in the South. This film not only tells the story of existing as an other in a predominately white environment, but of acceptance and identity in a world where you are never reflected.

Not only do people of color make up only 12.6 percent of major film directors, but research also estimates that only 1.3 out of 10 film directors are people of color. I’ve been able to put together a crew predominantly composed of people of color, who are all working with little to no compensation, to be a part of this piece. A previous kickstarter and a few academic grants have allowed us to cover half the money needed to make this film. But with your contribution, we are closer to our goal of covering equipment, cast, housing, locations, props, and catering for our cast and crew.

In solidarity,

Bree Nieves
