Support Coba's Ongoing Medical Care

Hi! My name is Callie Mulloy. Myself and my boyfriend Cory are in desperate need to raise money to help pay off veterinary debt and support the future care of our fur baby Coba.

We first got our sweet boy in January knowing that he was sick - previous veterinary care advised that he had a simple case of aspiration pneumonia which we were totally okay treating from there on. However, after two months of medicine and upping doses, there was zero change in Coba’s x-rays or lung function - which ended up in us getting a referral to an Internal Medicine Specialist in Nashville. Once there, they decided to do a tracheal swab to see what bacteria was causing his lung problems so that it could be treated properly. During that swab, they noticed that his soft palate was super long and his tonsils stuck out funny - both causing a blockage of his airway. Along with this, they saw that he had a hypoplastic trachea. All three of these things contributed to a new diagnosis of BOAS - brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome - meaning that Coba had to work a lot harder than an average dog to breathe properly. Upon waiting for his test results, Coba got very, very sick and ended up in the ER with his very first bout of true aspiration pneumonia. While he was there, his swab results came in that helped the doctors better treat his illness and get him back on track. Over the course of the next few months, Coba was back and forth to the ER and became very well-known at our vet - both for aspiration pneumonia and regular pneumonia. These issues were so consistent due to his BOAS diagnosis which made it easier for him to aspirate while eating. This led us to doing a swallow study that showed not only does he struggle eating solids and drinking water, but that there is a reason for it. We found out that our baby boy has a condition very similar to megaesophagus. This condition also increases Coba’s likelihood of aspiration, as well as it contributes to low-functioning digestion as food takes longer to reach his stomach. Once we finally saw the true extent of Coba’s medical problems, we were able to make crucial adjustments to ensure his safety and well-being while eating, playing, and just about everything else. From there, we decided to get BOAS surgery in August for Coba which removed his elongated soft palate, as well as his tonsils to open up his airway. This surgery has helped his breathing immeasurably, and it has even stopped him from aspirating thanks to that and other medicines that speed up his digestion. However, because he has dealt with so many consistent cases of pneumonia, it has reduced his lung tissue to mostly only scar tissue. This makes it a lot easier for him to get sick. Since his surgery in August, although he has not been sick quite as often, he has dealt with a few cases of pneumonia that have been very hard on his little body.

We are so grateful and thankful that we have been able to afford his medical bills through Care Credit. But, this method of payment can only go so far before the max amount is reached. We have tried our best to pay this debt off to ensure we can afford future care, but the consistency of vet bills and ER stays have made it hard to catch up. We currently owe a little over $15,000 in debt on Care Credit, and we have very minimal wiggle room to afford anything else.

We love Coba more than words could ever express. Despite his medical history and conditions, he is one of the happiest babies in the whole world. He loves his food, treats, playing with squeaky toys, and sniffing all the good stuff. He is so full of energy, love, and light… and we want to make sure that he can keep going for as long as possible.

We are only asking for help to pay off current debt so that we may be able to afford more vet care or emergencies as time goes on.

He has an older fur brother who loves him dearly and a human brother coming in January that we are so badly wanting to make sure he meets. Any and all donations to help us (but more importantly our baby Coba) out mean more than anything to us. We are so very grateful and thankful to anyone who chooses to donate.
