Support Chagossian student to reach his ambition

Donation protected
"As a student of Chagossian heritage, the greatest wish I possess is to bring honor and pride to my Chagossian ancestors and to the Chagossian community by showing how, despite having been forced to struggle against the oppression of our people for several years now, Chagossian children are being given the chance to be a voice for change." - Noah Labutte

Noah is 19 years old, he lives in Port Louis, Mauritius. Noah has recently been accepted onto a course in Psychology at the University of Prince Edward’s Island in Canada, beginning in January 2021.

HE NEEDS OUR SUPPORT TO GET HIM THERE

Noah is 3rd generation Chagossian: his grandfather was born on the islands and had been working in Agalega when the British government ordered the "sanitisation" of the Chagos Archipelago to make way for the US Naval base on Diego Garcia. Like many others, Noah's grandfather was barred from returning and the remaining Chagossian population were forced onto boats and dumped at the docks in Mauritius and the Seychelles.

Now Noah has an opportunity to study abroad. He and his family have worked hard to survive the turmoil of a life in exile. Noah's ambition and drive to succeed have got him this far but because of the refusal of the British government to give many young Chagossians British citizenship, Noah cannot get access to student loans and funding that would support his studies abroad.

The Chagossian community are victims of the Hostile Environment. Chagossians are British, they were born on British soil and they're children and grandchildren have been born in exile, imposed on them by the British government. Complex and convoluted citizenship rules, alongside the huge cost of applications, have separated families and caused a lot of problems.

For young Chagossians like Noah, their history and the uncertainty of a life in exile limits their opportunities for further education. All young people have ambitions to leave home, work and study abroad, to discover the world and create a life of their own, but the British government is denying young Chagossians this - on top of everything else!

The Chagos Refugees Group UK is asking for supporters of the Chagossian cause and supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, to help Noah and other young Chagossians

Noah's university fees are US $12,000. He is working hard to raise the money himself and his family are going to help however they can but your support is vital to make his studies abroad possible.
