One day you catch yourself daydreaming about marshmallow muppets in math and the teacher says “Hey, why don’t you make a play out of that?”

“What? A play from daydreams?” you say.

“And by the way, you are hereby challenged to assemble a team to build a machine to throw away my trash!”

That’s what our Odyssey of the Mind is like! An adventure where silly makes sense and if you can get a device to do your chores for you, then you should!

Turns out our random group of students are pretty good at being silly (sandwiches in the face, robots from the future, and crazy neighbors), building contraptions that work, improvising on-stage, and solving problems creatively! They even bested high schoolers in on-the-spot timed competitions!

They went up against much older teams and others with more experience and came in first place at the state championship!

Can you help them bring their kooky ideas to Michigan to compete at the international level?

Funds raised will be used toward housing at the university, fees, and travel expenses.

Good evening, folks! Welcome to tonight's Odyssey of the Mind match which promises to be a classic. In the red corner are seasoned teams from each state and around the world! In the pink and blue corner, many students weighing in at under 70 pounds soaking wet…..the undisputed STATE CHAMPIONS of Northern California….. representing Coastline Christian School AND ALAMEDA!!! …. THE COTTON CANDY SCIENTISTS!!!!! (crowd roars with excitement)

Mia the Mobster (6th Grade) I describe myself as an outgoing person. In OM, I learned that I actually like building things with my hands! We get to give ideas and make it happen without any parent interference. I’m excited to go to Worlds to see the created props of all of the other teams. Kiersten and I wrote the script for the performance.

Dexton the Destroyer (4th Grade) I like Roblox and Geometry Dash. In OM, we can all be creative and solve problems together, like when we were stuck on action C and figured out that we could use a second ball to make the snack dispensing machine work.

Ethan the Electric Eel (4th Grade) I like Mark Rober, Project Air and Stuff Made Here and playing the piano. I composed the song for our skit. In OM, I thought of a lot of space vehicle designs. I learned I’m pretty funny on stage and don’t feel afraid of performing at all now. I’m very excited to go on an airplane with my new OM friends and stay in a dorm. I’m a bit anxious about how the props will fit in a box.

Nick Colossus (4th Grade) I’m dramatic, curious and creative. A joyful moment for me was when we aced the rehearsal and the whole device worked because we had spent so much time on it! It was VERY frustrating when the DEVICE KEPT ON FAILING and we had to keep trying!!!! I learned that I get very emotional when the device failed because we had to fix it and keep trying. OM tests our endurance for failure and the team keeps us from giving up.

Kung Fu Kiersten (6th Grade) I would describe myself as a persevering person. I’m also Nick’s older sister. One of the most joyful moments in OM for me is when we got to compete in the state tournament and got first place. After all our hard work on creating the project, it was really rewarding. I was frustrated when the background wouldn't stand initially. When given a problem, it's important to stay calm and think of how to solve our way around it. I learned how to work with others, respecting their ideas.

The Tim-inator (7th Grade) Spelling is hard for me, but I’m really good at drawing and building. I think really well in 3-D. OM was a long commitment, we met for 6 hours a week for 6 months. I was the oldest in the group and had to learn how to work with much younger kids and be patient. I really DID NOT want to speak on-stage, but the team wanted me to be the lead role, so I did it. In the performance, I was good at staying calm even when the machine wasn’t performing exactly as planned and helping make it not seem like a big deal. I like it when everything makes sense, but our skit is very silly and sometimes random, but in the end the silliness got us more points because we got the judges to laugh and that helped us win. I’m looking forward to seeing teams from other countries and seeing what they created.
