<div>As some of you already know, Carla has been battling medical issues on and off most of her adult life. She has overcome a cancer diagnosis as a young mother with subsequent chemotherapy and radiation and is now thankfully considered a survivor. However, the radiation she received, although needed at the time, did irreversible damage to her heart. After she lost her brother to cardiac issues, she tested her own heart and found out that she had moderately leaky valves and would need surgery at some point but it could be monitored with medicine and yearly procedures. Fast forward to after Covid. Her valves needed to be fixed sooner than initially thought, as they were leaking severely. She underwent open-heart surgery to repair her mitral valve and aortic valve. Unfortunately, surgery didn’t go as planned. She ended up with a pacemaker, two mechanical valves, and dialysis for kidney failure. After 67 days, she was released on outpatient dialysis, which she eventually was able to stop, but the damage was done. Since then, she has struggled to live a normal life with many complications due to her surgery. The list is long. She now needs a heart transplant, as well as a kidney transplant to continue being the shining light I know she is. If you know her, you know what I’m talking about. She can instantly light up a room with her smile! Carla is kind, selfless, and so much fun! She is grateful for everyone and everything in her life. Carla is not only beautiful on the outside, she is so incredibly beautiful on the inside. She is the strongest (and most stubborn) person I know and she continues to use those traits to overcome the medical challenges that she has been faced with.
