<div>Byron was born with a Cleft Palate and was recently seen at the Cleft Center in Denver. After originally believing it was a Level I Cleft, they received the news that it was a Level II Cleft, requiring a much more extensive surgery and an ICU stay following the procedure. The type of cleft Byron has also leaves him susceptible to a higher risk of suffocation. They also received the news that Byron possibly will need surgery to fix his hearing if he doesn't pass his hearing test at 4 months.

<div>"Yesterday we had Byron’s consult at the Cleft Clinic in Denver (we made it home safely around 1:30 a.m.). We originally believed he had a level 1 cleft—just a small hole in the soft palate—which would’ve meant a relatively quick fix with a couple of stitches and a short recovery.

<div>However, the consult brought some unexpected and more serious news. Byron actually has a level 2 cleft, which extends into his hard palate. This means he will need a much more extensive, four-hour surgery where the surgeons will detach and reposition muscles in his mouth and throat to where they should be. He’ll need to stay in the ICU for at least two days—possibly three—depending on how the reconstruction goes, followed by an additional two days of observation.

<div>We also learned that if he doesn’t pass his hearing screening at four months, he’ll require surgery in both ears to avoid permanent hearing loss.

<div><strong>And finally, perhaps the most frightening part: the type of cleft he has causes his lower jaw to be set back far enough that he’s at risk of airway obstruction. This means there’s a risk of suffocation at any time, which is terrifying.</strong>
