Hello everyone,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Bridgette Webb, and I’m 44 years old. I wanted to share my journey with you, as it has been quite challenging. On November 13, 2023, I received the difficult news that I have hereditary cancer due to a mutation in the BRCA2 gene. This diagnosis brought with it the sobering realization that I have a 49% chance of developing ovarian cancer and an 89% chance for breast cancer.
In March 2024, I made the tough decision to undergo a complete hysterectomy, which was a necessary step in my fight against this disease. Looking ahead, I have my double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery scheduled for August 14, 2025, at The Center for Restorative Breast Surgery at St. Charles Surgical Hospital in New Orleans.
I will be in New Orleans from August 13 to August 21, 2025. After spending 2 days in the hospital, I will need to stay in a hotel until my post-operative appointment on August 21, as I won’t be able to travel right after my surgery.
While my insurance has approved my surgery, I am still facing the challenge of meeting the deductible and out-of-pocket costs, totaling $7,783.13 for the physicians and $1,000 for the hospital. Fortunately, once I cover these amounts, the second and third stages of my treatment will come with no additional costs.
For those who may not be familiar with the BRCA gene: The BRCA2 gene (Breast Cancer Gene 2) is essential for our bodies’ DNA repair process. When it is mutated, it can significantly elevate the risk of certain cancers, particularly breast and ovarian cancer in women, and breast and prostate cancer in men. Those with a BRCA2 mutation may develop Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) syndrome, increasing the risk for various cancers, including pancreatic cancer. This is a challenging reality for many, as these mutations hinder the body’s ability to effectively repair damaged DNA — a critical function for preventing cancer.
With all of this in mind, it is incredibly important for me to have this surgery as soon as possible, as my risk of developing breast cancer increases with age.
I am reaching out with a humble heart, seeking support for my deductible, travel expenses, and hotel stay during this challenging time.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story. Your kindness and understanding mean the world to me.
