Brenda Sperandios Fight Against Cancer!

Our mother had ocular melanoma in 2011. Approximately 4-8 people out of  every 1 million get this type of cancer, and 50% move on to develop metastases within 10 years from initial diagnosis.  Her eye was surgically removed during this battle, and she has been ‘cancer free’ ever since. She may have lost her eye, but my mom and family were nothing but happy as she got to keep her life. We have lived gratefully everyday since. This month, however, we found out that the cancer had metastasized to the liver. Our mother has liver cancer (AKA metastasized ocular/uveal melanoma).

She will be flying to Toronto to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre once a week for chemo/treatments/medical appointments which have already begun. As well, she will be trying out experimental drugs and clinical trials. Although the prognosis for this disease is generally poor, we remain hopeful.  She will not be able to work as she is expected to experience side effects  from the chemotherapy (on top of being out of town for 2-3 days once a week). My father has recently been laid off due to the fire that took place a few weeks ago at Musslewhite mine. Chemotherapy is expected to begin in the next 2 weeks.  Right now the future is uncertain but we will continue to update this page as we know more. Erica will be moving to Toronto for the summer to be there in support during weekly chemo treatments. Our father will also be accompanying her to many/most of her appointments.

The first time our mother fought cancer, she was in the middle of her nursing degree(as Erica is now). She completed on time, all while supporting her family. She has always been so strong and so brave. Even now, throughout this entire process she has remained so happy, positive and optimistic. We can only hope as her daughters, to inherit half the strength she has.  She is so incredibly strong and has beat this once, I know she will fight with all she has.  She has always supported Leah and I so much, and has cared for so many people throughout her nursing career. She has always gone above and beyond for her family, friends, and her patients. We want to support our mom the way she has always supported us and everyone else during this difficult time in her life.

All funds raised will go towards; flights, accommodations, medical costs, prescriptions, and anything else that may be of need in this time of reduced income & increased costs.
Anything is so very appreciated!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
