The Daponte String Quartet - Brahms two String Sextets at the Barn - Sunday, July 7, 4:00PM
The DSQ is one of the finest, classical ensembles in Maine and beyond. We have been honored to feature them again in our 2024 season.
Please visit the websites for the DSQ (https://dapontequartet.org) and Surry Arts listed below for background information.
Please help us to continue our mission of bringing access to the arts to rural communities.
They will present a rich and dramatic program consisting of the two Brahms string sextets.
The cost of having the performance with 6 musicians of international experience and exceptional artistry far exceeds $1200.00.
We appeal to you, our listeners, performers, and supporters, to help us match $1200.00. Of course, we would greatly appreciate more as this would only help us to fund just one of our approximately 24 performances this season.
Surry Arts and Events features performing and visual arts. The barn began its musical life with international chamber concerts starting in 1965. It was founded by Walter Nowick, a gifted and charismatic pianist. Over almost a 60 year span, the Barn was known as the Surry Concert Barn, and then the Surry Opera Company in the 1980s / 1990s and early 2000s. It was internationally recognized in the New York Times, People Magazine, and network TV news features. In short, it has been a place of the arts, cross-cultural exchange, understanding, and friendship. These are some of the essential areas that enrich our lives and are sorely lacking in the geopolitics of today.
Actually, our Russian counterparts termed our joint music festivals "People of the Earth Together." How sweet that sounds now, looking out at the decline of relations in 2024!
Please see below for two lines about the Brahms Sextets and the
DSQ and Surry Arts websites:
Brahms' two sextets are early works, composed in 1860 and 1865 respectively. Brahms wrote to his publisher that the second was in ‘the same joyful vein’ as the first. Yet the composer’s life was sombre at this time: his mother died suddenly and his romantic relationship with the soprano Agathe von Siebold ended in failure.
We look forward to your generous support.
Sincerely,
PS: Donations of $50.00 or more will receive one Barn pass, $100.00 or more will receive two Barn passes - donations of $250.00 or more will receive five passes,
