Black Mother Needs Medical Care and Peace of Mind

Who I am: I am an Afro-Indigenous woman scholar native to New Orleans and the Bahamas, pursuing a joint Ph.D. in Africana Studies and Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. Visit www.gmarisjones.com for more about me.
What the deal is: I'm raising funds for a beloved community member, who prefers to remain anonymous, who is in need of financial support due to a healthcare emergency that will necessitate surgery (specifically a "conization procedure" to remove part of her cervix where cancerous cells have grown - as found from a biopsy/colposcopy exam following the identification of abnormal cell growth during a routine Pap smear).
She is a Black woman native to a gentrifying, historically Black city, a single parent, and an independent contractor without health insurance whose work as an advocate and thinker has had broad, meaningful impact.
She seeks support that will cover the cost of medical care, scheduled for mid-December (surgery & homeopathic care/medicines to supplement that traditional Western care = $5000) and two months of: housing costs ($4000); food ($600); transportation (car note/insurance/gas $1400); and mental health services ($1200).
Why: Black women deserve holistic care and peace of mind that centuries of colonization and anti-Black, gendered racism have stolen from us.
No offering is too small or too large.
A note from my friend:
"I wish to express my deep gratitude for the Black and Indigenous women activists who fought to minimize the violence and maximize the accessibility of reproductive healthcare for all people. Though there's still much work to do, we've come a long way from a time when hysterectomies were prescribed by white doctors as a cure-all for Black and Indigenous women's reproductive issues. I was able to find out about these growths very early (1) because of older Black women who taught me how to demand respect for my body and (2) because of rare, quality healthcare that didn't require me to do so. I'm grateful to have caught it early so as to only need surgery and not chemotherapy and radiation. Please get regular pap smears. Thank you for your compassion and trust, and I blow blessings your way with my prayers."
