<div>Our family is reaching out during the most difficult moment we’ve ever faced. On a recent hike—one of the activities he loves most—our beloved Bill Spenceley was violently attacked. He has suffered severe, life‑altering injuries, including possible brain trauma, and is now fighting for his life. <div>Bill is not just a member of our family—he is a pillar of the Arcata, California community. After attending Humboldt State University in the early 1970s, he dedicated his life to education, equity, and service. He began as a preschool teacher and later taught Indigenous students on reservations in the Northwest, bringing compassion, patience, and joy to every classroom he entered.

<div>For 34 years, Bill worked at HCAR (Humboldt Community Access and Resource Center), a nonprofit committed to supporting individuals with disabilities through employment and community inclusion. He served as Director for most of his career, shaping programs, mentoring staff, and advocating fiercely for the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities. His work changed countless lives, and his legacy is woven into the fabric of the community he served.

<div>Outside of work, Bill is known for his deep love of nature. He could often be found hiking or running the local trails, greeting everyone he passed with warmth and humor. A lifelong vegetarian, he has always stood up for the wellbeing of animals and the planet. He is caring, funny, gentle, principled, and endlessly generous—the kind of person who shows up for others without hesitation.
