Support Bernadette's Medical Bills

Donation protected
On July 5th , 2017 my mom revealed to our family that she was diagnosed with MDS Blood cancer. My family and I have had our world turned upside down. The woman who is the bedrock of our family, the person who we gain all of our strength from—is in the mist of her own battle. We created this Go Fund Me page to be used as a platform of support and care for my mother’s hospital Bills. Although we may not be in the position to take care of every need she has, we do have the resources to draw on a supportive community during these times of need. Just a few short months prior to this news I was accepted into the Peace Corps to serve as a English Teacher in Namibia, Africa. My idealism was short lived. I Realized that the true service I must give belongs to my family and the recovery of my mother’s emotional, physical, financial, and spiritual wellbeing.

This has been an excruciating adjustment for our family. Our mother has taught us all of our core values family, empathy and ethics. Sometimes, however, life has other plans for an individual’s journey and purpose in this world. Even when you think you have planned accordingly. The saying goes, "if you ever want to make God laugh...tell them your plans." That sentiment rings clear for me on days that force our family to be emotionally and financially flexible. My Mother, Bernadette Chandler, has not only cared for her own children with love and compassion—but she has done the same to strangers and friends alike.

My mother embodies the strength and resilience of an empowered Black Woman. She began her journey to Minnesota in 1980. She attended OIC Electronic from 1988-1989 as an Electronic technician. Later realizing that if she truly wanted to survive in Minnesota after her transition from High Springs, Florida she would have to obtain a College Degree. She attended MCTC and later went on to finish her degree at the age of 35 from Augsburg College in 1995, graduating with her B.A. in Marketing and a minor in Information Management. Not to mention, that she birthed her first child in 1984, her second in 1986, and her third in 1993. She was not married and my father refused to help her raise her three children. My mother has worked hard every day of her life trying to support her family. She worked as product manager for Wells Fargo from 1996-2009. Not only did she work a 9-5, she also contributed her spare time into creating the first Black Employee Resource Group that still continues on today. Although her roots began in Florida, she made a home out of Minnesota. And because she never wanted to uproot her family she stayed and worked in Minnesota through the Great Recession and back to stable grounds at Emerson Process Management from 2011- until now. She has reared 3 young, Black, educated children through college and onto multiple degrees. She has never cried, complained or cowered behind a challenge. And I know Cancer will be no different.

In June, 2017 my mom was officially diagnosed with Cancer. She went in for her physical and was informed that her blood results came back irregular and needed to be tested for MDS blood cancer. My mother is the epitome of the black female archetype, never wanting to let on about her struggles. Well, I'm here to tell her story. My mom is sick and has begun her 30 day treatment of Chemo at Park Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN. Thankfully, two of her sisters that were able to donate bone marrow have been tested as 100% perfect match for the transplant.

My mother would probably never make this for herself, let alone show that she needs help . However, no one person works in isolation, and now more than ever we need the generosity of the world to burst forth and be a blessing to someone in need. My mother will be unable to work until Feburary of 2018, Lord willing. We are asking for any amount you are able to donate to go toward my Mother’s medical bills and to help cover the medical cost.

This is not a fundraiser for food or to buy something frivolous. This donation can make a difference in someone’s life. This donation can help elevate a tremendous financial burden of medical bills for a hard working woman. This donation can be the difference between you and someone's blessings. Together any amount can add towards saving a life.
