Support Beiruti Families

Support Beiruti families affected by the explosion

We, former and current Beiruti´s, are calling for support for our community through this humanitarian fundraising initiative. All of us, Maha Maalouf (Lebanese /professional photographer), Samar Korban (Lebanese / Communication Officer), Petra Khoury (Lebanese / University Professor), Nour Phneish (Lebanese / professional in the development sector), Adina Suza (German / consultant specialized in gender equality and women´s rights) and Afsana Rezaie (German / professional in the development sector), lived and worked in the beautiful neighborhoods of Gemmayzeh, Mar Mikhael and Geitawi. The neighborhood that got wrecked within minutes on August 4th, 2020.  Behind every building there is a family, a worker, a face that we know, that we have engaged with or worked with.

We are joining forces and are calling for your support to help the families most in need and overwhelmingly burdened by the explosion. Not only is the destruction of the city caused by the explosion forcing Beiruti´s into precarious living conditions, even prior to this, the economic situation was at the downfall;

We went on the ground and have identified 13 families/households in our neighborhood (Mar Mikhael, Burj Hamoud, Getawi) in desperate need of support. We are aware that currently there are a lot of NGOs on the ground to support in reconstructing buildings but it will be taking a long time until this support reaches the right people. The rainy season and winter will be coming soon, hence, the doors and windows need to be repaired as soon as possible and some people need urgent medical assistance. We initiate this fundraising campaign to help our neighbors with an immediate response, each donation, even the smallest contribution will be helpful.

Who will you support:

An estimate of 72.000 apartments are damaged, 300.000 people are displaced within minutes (source: ACTED, UN-OCHA), around 170 people or even more died, and more than 30 persons are still missing. Behind all these numbers there are life tragedies. We know a few of them and want to ask for your help to ease their pain and burdens. We have identified the below 13 families/individuals who all live close to the explosion site and need immediate help.

How do we reach these families/individuals:

The donations collected through this initiative will be distributed to the above-mentioned families and individuals to pay hospital bills of people who got severely injured by the explosion, to pay for repair works of windows, doors, furniture and equipment destroyed due to the blast and to help these families get their lives back on track. Some houses are also structurally damaged which caused cut off from electricity and water and the families cannot afford a generator.

Due to the Lebanese banking system, we will bring the donation in cash directly to Lebanon and hand it over to the families as soon as possible. We will document the handover and can provide you with proof of evidence.

We need your support to help relieve these families. Please donate and share with your friends.
