As the Lead Street Medic with 50501 Georgia, I'm part of an incredible team of street medics and marshals dedicated to keeping people safe while they exercise their fundamental right to protest. In these crucial times, it's more important than ever for people to stand up, speak out, and fight for equality, justice, and democracy. Our mission is to create a secure environment so these vital voices can be heard without fear of harm.
One of the most critical aspects of our work is clear and reliable communication. When someone in a large crowd needs medical attention or when we need to coordinate our efforts to ensure safety, every second counts. Unfortunately, our current radio system (Retevis RT22) presents significant challenges. The bustling environment of Atlanta, combined with radio interference, makes it incredibly difficult to hear and understand each other, especially as we spread out within a protest. The further apart we are, the less effective our radios become, which puts people at risk.
That's why we're raising money to purchase Nationwide PTT Walkie-Talkies. These advanced radios will allow us to communicate clearly and consistently, no matter how large the crowd or how far apart our team members are. This upgrade is absolutely essential for us to effectively respond to medical emergencies, manage crowd safety, and ensure the well-being of everyone present as they bravely advocate for change.
While all our street medics volunteer their time and generously provide their own medical supplies, the cost of these nationwide radios is a significant hurdle. We need to purchase at least 50 radios with earpieces, and with GoFundMe fees, they cost $200 each.
