When Covid-19 triggered the big lockdown in India, the crisis was not just the disease, but also the fact that thousands of day-wager migrant workers suddenly lost their jobs in cities, and walked many miles back to their villages since the public transport was also stopped. Ram Niwas was one such migrant, who returned to Hanauta, one of our project villages in Madhya Pradesh. His wife, two children and his parents who live in the village depended upon the remittances he was sending from the city for survival. The reason he had to leave the village to work in the city was that agricultural jobs for land-less laborers such as him had become scarce due to the drop in the water table and crop failures in this drought prone area. Asia Initiatives is helping people like Ram Niwas and his family with immediate food distribution, as well as offering solutions to build long term resilience in our project areas.

We are putting to work SoCCs , our community currency for social good that has received recognition as a "World Changing Idea ", to build check dams, rainwater harvesting trenches, and to plant trees. Fortunately this is a perfect time for this work before the arrival of the Monsoon in July. People will earn SoCCs for their work, and SoCCs will be redeemable for food, healthcare, and other necessities.
