My name is Iñigo Mijangos, I have been in 2016 as field coordinator of SMH (Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario) in Chios (Northen Aegean) for six month in different periods. When I was not in Greece, I normally support SMH in fundraising, coordination and sensitization activities, occasionally I worked in my own business.
For 2017 SMH has an ambitious project based in 3 main actions:
- Open a Centre for medical atention for people without economical resources in Chios island (refugees and locals), engaging local volunteers, refugees and international solidarity
- Support and organize crew interchange with other Humanitarian SAR NGOs that are operating in Mediterranean Sea
- Sensitization and eduction our society to be ready as host society
Other minor objectives but not less important, are formation of SMH members and volunteers in SAR operational technics and vertebrate the NGO to be financially sustaintable.
I have assume the responsability of carrying out these commitments as President of SMH for 2017.
SMH is a small basque NGO funded in 2015 as a solidarity civil response to the massive arrivals to the europeans shores. SMH first activity was in SAR operations in the Aegean later on extender to medical emergencies. All funds are provided by citizens or entities not related with goverment or public institutions except a few municipalites.

SMH is totally formed by volunteers and no member obtain a payment or salary for his activity in the NGO. Much less the Government board. SMH only cover the hosting and basic needs once the volunteers are deployed in the field.
Thay is why I started this fundrising campaing to support myself for the period 2017 in my personal expenses due SMH presidency will require almost a full time dedication.
2016 period was totally supported by my saving but my financial situation is not strong enought to face a second year without significant incomes.
If this campaign is successful, the surplus funds will be dedicated to the SMH project that most needs it.
