Miye Ota needs our support and love

Miye Ota needs our love and support right now as she has taken a dreadful fall.   She keeps her ki flowing strong, but has fractured vertebrae and is experiencing  great pain when she moves.  She is pain-free when she is in a fixed position thankfully.  Miye now needs 24-7 assistance to take care of her basic needs because of her immobility and physical disabilities. She is currently at Valle Verde nursing home in Santa Barbara.  She is waiting to have a non-invasive back surgery, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the operation is being delayed.   Miye continues to have a positive attitude and a "never give up" mindset.  She is going with the flow of this new chapter in her life and doing everything she can to heal.  Such is 'the way of the spirit of harmony' taught by the Otas in Aikido and Dance!

The shot-term estimated costs are $7,000 per month for a 6-month period.  A total of $42,000 is needed to pay for 24-7 care in a nursing facility as Miye does not have sufficient health insurance, savings or liquid cash available.  There is a team of supporters helping the Otas (Miye and Steve) during these challenging times.  Folks are currently looking into financing options related to the Dojo property to ensure Miye and Steve can live comfortably during their sunset times in life.  There is much hope that Miye and Steve will both recover from their health struggles soon and have a dignified quality of life despite the set backs.

If you have any questions about Miye or Steve, please don't hesitate to click on the Contact button below.  We are getting status updates from the immediate caregivers who have been blessings and earth angels providing much physical love and support during these times.

Your love and support for Miye would be received with deep gratitude and is much needed!  She and her husband, Kenji, built the Goleta Dojo called "The Cultural School" in 1964 and dedicated their lives to teaching aikido, judo and ballroom dancing to youth and adults of all ages.  Miye has an incredible life story, born and raised in the 805 area (Guadalupe), that involves a journey from a thriving childhood, to the strife of the Japanese internment camps where she met Ken, to opening a beauty salon in Philadelphia, to opening a beauty salon in Goleta before the dojo was built, to the boundless joy she has had helping cultivate the many wonderful memories for so many families and individuals in the Santa Barbara area who passed through The Cultural School and Montecito Cotillion.

Miye Ota is 101 years old and was named Woman of the Year in 2018 by the Goleta Chamber of Commerce for not only being a co-founder of the original Goleta Chamber of Commerce, but also for her decades of contributions to the local community in partnership with her husband Kenji Ota.   See below articles for more information.
