Support and Love for Amanda Spiller

A journey with Amanda….

I have the privilege of working with Amanda.  She is 26 and has a love for life.  She loves to ride her motorcycle and she loves her dog.  She is married to a wonderful man, Jason. She started with our school last year.  She came in with a zeal for the students and is one of the hardest working teachers I know.  She takes on several additional roles in our school like yearbook, volleyball club, box tops, just to name a few examples. She even helped plan our Cancer Awareness Day. On a given evening when Amanda is leaving work, she stops in my office to ask, “Is there anything I can support you with before I go?”

Last year Amanda was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.  The cancer is so extensive that they are unable to operate in most of the affected areas.  She recently underwent a hysterectomy to remove one area of cancer.  She has been told that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes. I sat down with Amanda recently to catch up and was so saddened to hear what she was dealing with.  By looking at Amanda, you would never guess she is living through these difficulties, much less surviving cancer. From Amanda’s research, she shared that once cancer reaches the lymph nodes, there is a 5% chance of living beyond the next five years. With tears in her eyes, my heart sank.  She feels alone because the doctors seem to have given up on her and are offering no real support.  I began asking who she and her husband could meet with to get some moral support and an understanding of what is to be expected as they move forward.  This is why I am coming to you all now.  I want to show Amanda our support. Last spring,  we were able to raise some funds when our staff and students helped Amanda shave her head.  The reason she wanted to shave her own head was, “I am not going to let cancer own me.  It’s not going to say if I have hair or  not.  I am going to say when I don’t have hair.”  Amanda is my hero.  Please help me in supporting a teacher who is a hero to our school and to our community. We are hoping to raise $5,000 to help ease the financial burden that cancer has brought Amanda’s family. We sincerely appreciate your contributions, and we can’t wait to see the blessing pour in to Amanda and her family’s lives!
