<div>My name is Dr Norma Bowe. I am a professor. My incredible student Amiya Valentine just graduated on May 13 with a degree in public health and magna cum laude honors from Kean University. She has been accepted into a dual graduate program at Rutgers University in the fall in Social Work and Criminal Justice. Her hard working husband? He could not attend graduation. On Saturday May 10 at 8:45 am he was stopped by an unmarked car. They told him that he matched the description of someone they were looking for and even though he is not that person, ICE agents grabbed him anyway. Took his car keys. Left his car parked on a quiet street in Roselle Park. (The cruel thing is that this is the car the whole family uses to get to work and they only had that set of keys)

<div>My student texted me right away. Dr Bowe. Please pick up it’s urgent. I call her. She is inconsolably crying. She has no idea where he is and this went on for hours. He literally disappeared.

<div>Delaney Hall looks like a maximum security prison. It is a stones throw from Newark Airport. We are told by a small group in front of the center that the close proximity makes it easier to do quick deportations. The building once used as a half way house now has barbed wire and razor fencing. And a high security gate. Armed guards (I mean completely armed) are wearing military fatigues. My student’s husband has never been in any trouble. Why is he there?!! The only explanation the small group outside tells me is that GEO group who runs this place has empty beds and they make money for every filled one.

<div>This is outrageous from beginning to end. Delaney Hall is operating illegally (see Mayor Ras Baraka’s arrest there). My student’s husband was seized illegally. His rights were violated. He was just driving to work. He was racially profiled

Una historia real. Un llamado urgente a la solidaridad.

Mi nombre es Dra. Norma Bowe y soy profesora universitaria. Quiero compartir con ustedes lo que le ha ocurrido a una de mis estudiantes más brillantes: Amiya Valentine.

El pasado 13 de mayo, Amiya se graduó con honores magna cum laude en Salud Pública en Kean University. Una estudiante excepcional, con un futuro prometedor: ha sido aceptada en un programa de posgrado dual en Rutgers University para estudiar Trabajo Social y Justicia Criminal este otoño.

Pero tres días antes de su graduación, su vida cambió por completo.

El sábado 10 de mayo a las 8:45 a.m., su esposo —un hombre trabajador, respetuoso de la ley, sin antecedentes, con su documentación migratoria ya en trámite y casado legalmente con una ciudadana estadounidense— fue detenido ilegalmente por agentes de ICE.

Iba camino al trabajo cuando fue detenido por un auto sin identificación. Le dijeron que “coincidía con la descripción” de alguien que buscaban. Aunque no era esa persona, los agentes lo arrestaron, le quitaron las llaves del auto familiar (el único que tiene la familia), y dejaron el vehículo abandonado en una calle tranquila de Roselle Park, NJ.

Amiya me escribió de inmediato:
“Dra. Bowe, por favor conteste. Es urgente.”
Cuando la llamé, estaba inconsolable. No sabía dónde estaba su esposo. Estuvo desaparecido por horas.

Finalmente supimos que lo habían trasladado a Delaney Hall, un centro de detención en Newark operado por la empresa privada GEO Group. Este lugar, que alguna vez fue una casa de transición, ahora luce como una prisión de máxima seguridad: cercas con alambre de púas, guardias fuertemente armados, portones de alta seguridad. Un pequeño grupo afuera nos dijo que, por estar tan cerca del aeropuerto, las deportaciones se hacen rápido. También nos dijeron que GEO gana dinero por cada cama ocupada, y por eso llenan el centro, sin importar si la detención es legal o no.

El esposo de Amiya no tiene antecedentes. No representa ningún peligro. Lo que ocurrió fue un acto de perfilamiento racial y una violación clara de sus derechos.

Esta injusticia ha causado una crisis económica y emocional para la familia. Han tenido que contratar un abogado de defensa en procesos de deportación, lo cual costó $8,000 USD. Amiya trabaja como terapeuta ABA, pero no puede tomar nuevos clientes por el momento. Su esposo, además, ha perdido sus ingresos diarios.

Este es el momento de actuar. De apoyar a una joven pareja que ha hecho todo bien. Que trabaja duro. Que estudia. Que construye un mejor futuro.
