<div>Heel erg bedankt dat je deze crowdfundpagina leest. Deze crowdfunding is opgezet voor onze dochter Amilia. Zij is ernstig ziek en heeft een ingrijpende operatie in het buitenland nodig. Een operatie die in Nederland niet kan worden uitgevoerd door gebrek aan expertise. Omdat deze behandeling niet door de verzekering wordt vergoed, vragen wij dringend om jullie hulp en steun. Amilia wil namelijk niets liever dan weer genieten van het leven en meedoen in de samenleving.

<div><strong>Amilia’s verhaal</strong>

</div>
<div>Amilia heeft het Ehlers Danlos Syndroom, een erfelijke aandoening waarbij het bindweefsel in haar lichaam te zwak is. Bindweefsel houdt alles in het lichaam op zijn plaats en als dat niet goed werkt, zorgt dat voor veel problemen. Bij Amilia leidt dit inmiddels tot veel klachten: gewrichten die uit de kom gaan, chronische pijn, verzakkingen en organen die niet goed functioneren. Daarbovenop heeft ze ook nog andere gerelateerde aandoeningen zoals maag- en darmproblemen, POTS, MCAS, scoliose, visceroptose en endometriose. Ondanks haar ziekte blijft Amilia optimistisch en heeft ze tot 2024 gestudeerd, in een studentenhuis gewoond, geroeid bij een roeivereniging en genoot ze volop van het leven.

<div><strong>Wanneer ging het mis</strong>

<div>Het afgelopen jaar is haar aandoening helaas veel ernstiger geworden, dit komt door het progressieve karakter van de ziekte. Hierdoor woont zij nu weer bij ons thuis, kan zij haar droomstudie niet meer volgen en is zij bijna volledig aan bed gebonden. De grootste reden daarvoor zijn haar maag- en darmproblemen en de pijn die dit met zich meebrengt. Begin 2024 begon ze plotseling onverklaarbaar veel af te vallen. Ze kreeg hevige pijn na het eten, werd extreem misselijk en bereikte een gevaarlijk ondergewicht. Ze bezocht talloze artsen en probeerde vele behandelingen, maar niets hielp.

<div>Na het proberen van een vloeibaar dieet, wat helaas niet succesvol was, is bij haar een darmsonde geplaatst. Deze darmsonde schiet helaas heel vaak terug naar haar maag, soms al binnen een paar uur. Hierdoor heeft zij inmiddels al 13 keer een sondeplaatsing gehad dit jaar en is zij ook resistent geworden tegen het slaapmiddel dat wordt gebruikt tijdens de plaatsing. Hierdoor zijn de plaatsingen voor haar een hele nare ervaring.

<div>Na vele onderzoeken in het Erasmus MC bleek dat haar maag en darmen niet goed functioneren:

<div>•	Trage maaglediging

<div>•	Verzakte maag (gastroptose)

<div>•	Compressie op de darm
</div>
<div>•	Compressie op de nierader

<div>Ondanks deze bevindingen konden Nederlandse artsen haar klachten niet volledig verklaren of behandelen. Verder onderzoek kan alleen in het Maastricht UMC worden gedaan. Maar daar wordt zij niet als patiënt aangenomen vanwege haar ernstige ondergewicht.

<div><strong>Hoop in Spanje</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>Via lotgenoten kwam Amilia in contact met een gespecialiseerde vaatchirurg in Spanje, die veel ervaring heeft met vasculaire compressiesyndromen bij EDS-patiënten. Met koffers vol sondevoeding en nieuwe hoop reisden wij naar Málaga.

<div>Daar werd meteen duidelijk wat er mis is: Amilia heeft meerdere vasculaire compressiesyndromen. Dit zijn zeldzame aandoeningen, die vaker voorkomen bij EDS-patiënten, waarbij bloedvaten en organen in haar buik worden samengedrukt. Hierdoor worden de doorbloeding en spijsvertering ernstig verstoord.

<div>De gestelde diagnoses:

<div>•	Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS)
</div>
<div>•	Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS)
</div>
<div>•	May Turner Syndrome

<div>•	Nutcracker Phenomenon

<div>Wat betekent dit:
</div>
<div>•	De opening van haar dunne darm is nog maar 2 millimeter breed (in plaats van 2 à 3 centimeter).
</div>
<div>•	Een belangrijke zenuw in haar buik wordt afgekneld.
</div>
<div>•	Haar bekkenader is afgenomen van 1,2 cm naar 2 mm.
</div>
<div>•	Haar linker nierader is volledig ingevallen.
</div>

<div>Eten veroorzaakt hevige pijn, misselijkheid en uitputting. Ze leeft momenteel bijna volledig van sondevoeding. Ook de werking van haar darmen gaat op dit moment hard achteruit en haar zenuwstelsel is, mede door deze compressies, ontregeld.

<div><strong>Er is hoop, maar we hebben hulp nodig </strong>

<div>Volgens de arts zijn er 2 operaties nodig die haar situatie enorm kunnen verbeteren. Er is dus hoop! Doordat Amilia specialistische hulp nodig heeft vanwege haar EDS kan zij hieraan alleen in Spanje worden geholpen. De arts in Spanje heeft heel veel ervaring met deze aandoeningen, mensen uit de hele wereld komen bij hem voor deze operaties. De verzekering vergoed deze kostbare operaties helaas niet, daarom hebben wij jullie hulp hard nodig.

</div>
<div>•	Darmbypass (duodenojejunostomie) voor SMAS
</div>
<div>•	Middenrif bandje doorsnijden en verwijderen van de zenuwbundel om de pijn van MALS te verhelpen

<div>•	Het verwijderen van de blindedarm
</div>
<div>•	Plaatsing van een jejunostomie sonde en een gastrostomie sonde

<div><strong>Wat is er nodig?</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>Deze operaties kosten veel geld. Daarbij komen ook nog extra kosten, zoals de heen en terugreis naar Spanje, het verblijf van de mantelzorgers en eventuele overige medische kosten. Alles wat wordt opgehaald met deze crowdfunding gaat direct naar de medische zorg van Amilia.

<div>We schatten dat we ongeveer €60.000 nodig zullen hebben voor de operaties, verblijf van meerdere weken in het ziekenhuis voor het herstel, de onderzoeken, de nazorg en reis-/verblijfkosten voor zowel Amilia als haar mantelzorgers.

<div>Thank you so much for taking the time to read this crowdfunding page. This fundraiser has been set up for our daughter Amilia. She is really ill and in need of major surgery abroad. A surgery that cannot be performed in the Netherlands due to a lack of expertise. Because this surgery is not covered by insurance, we urgently ask for your help and support. Amilia wants nothing more than to enjoy life again and participate in society.

<div><strong>Amilia’s story</strong>

<div>Amilia has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic disorder in which the connective tissue in her body is very weak. Connective tissue keeps everything in the body in place, and when it does not function properly, it causes many problems. For Amilia, this results in various symptoms: joints that dislocate, chronic pain, organ prolapse, and organs that do not function properly. On top of that, she also has other conditions such as gastrointestinal issues, POTS, MCAS, scoliosis, visceroptosis, and endometriosis. Despite her illness, Amilia remained optimistic. Until 2024, she studied, lived in a student house, rowed at a rowing club, and enjoyed life to the fullest.

<div><strong>When things went wrong</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>Unfortunately, over the past year her condition has become much more severe due to the progressive nature of the disease. As a result, she now lives with us again, can no longer pursue her dream college degree, and is mostly bedridden. The main reason for this is her severe stomach and intestinal issues and the pain that comes with it.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In early 2024 she suddenly began to lose an alarming amount of weight. She experienced severe pain after eating, extreme nausea, and reached a dangerously low body weight. She visited countless of doctors and tried many treatments, but nothing helped.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>After attempting a liquid diet, which sadly was unsuccessful, they placed an NJ tube to feed directly into her small intestine. Bypassing her stomach. However, this tube frequently dislocates to her stomach, sometimes within just a few hours. Because of this, she has already undergone 13 tube placements this year, and she has since become resistant to the sedative used during the procedure. This makes the placements really traumatic for her.

<div>After extensive testing in Erasmus MC, it became clear that her stomach and intestines do not function properly:
</div>
<div>•	Delayed gastric emptying
</div>
<div>•	Slow intestinal transit
</div>
<div>•	Prolapsed stomach (gastroptosis)
</div>
<div>•	Compression of the duodenum
</div>
<div>•	Compression of the left renal vein

<div>Despite these findings, the doctors in the Netherlands were unable to fully explain or treat her symptoms. Further specialized testing is only possible at Maastricht UMC, but they will not accept her as a patient due to her being severely underweight.

<div><strong>Hope in Spain</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Through fellow patients, Amilia came in contact with a specialized vascular surgeon in Spain who has extensive experience with vascular compression syndromes in EDS patients. With suitcases full of tube-feeding supplies and new hope, we traveled to Málaga.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>There, it instantly became clear what is wrong: Amilia has multiple vascular compression syndromes. These are rare conditions in which blood vessels and organs in the abdomen are compressed, severely impairing blood flow and digestion.
</div>

</div>
<div>The diagnoses:
</div>

<div>•	Her left renal vein has completely collapsed.

<div>Eating causes intense pain, nausea, and exhaustion. She currently lives almost entirely off tube feeding. Her intestinal function is rapidly deteriorating, and her nervous system is affected, due to these compressions.

<div><strong>There is hope, but we need your help</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>According to the surgeon, two operations are needed that could significantly improve her condition. There is hope! Because Amilia requires highly specialized care due to her EDS, she can only undergo these surgeries in Spain. The surgeon there has extensive experience with these conditions, and patients from all over the world travel to him for treatment. Unfortunately, the insurance company will not cover these costly surgeries, which is why we urgently need your help.

<div>•	Cutting the median arcuate ligament and removal of the nerve bundle to relieve MALS pain

<div>•	Placement of a jejunostomy tube and a gastrostomy tube

<div><strong>What is needed?</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>These surgeries are very expensive. On top of that, there are additional costs such as travel to and from Spain, accommodation for caregivers, and other medical expenses. Everything raised through this crowdfunding campaign goes directly to Amilia’s medical care.

<div>We estimate that we will need around €60,000 for the surgeries, hospital stay for multiple weeks to recover, diagnostic tests, aftercare, and travel/accommodation costs for both Amilia and her caregivers.
