<div>We are reaching out as our dear friends’ daughter, Alessia, prepares for a life-saving bone marrow transplant to cure her sickle cell disease. This transplant, scheduled for January 2025, is the only option to end the ongoing pain and complications she has faced since infancy.

<div><strong>Alessia’s Journey</strong>
</div>
<div>Alessia has been battling sickle cell disease since she was born. Despite taking daily medications since she was just 6 weeks old, these treatments only manage her symptoms. In the last two years, the family has been preparing for a bone marrow transplant, which offers hope for a cure. While they are grateful for a donor match, the road ahead is tough.
</div>
<div>In preparation for the transplant, Alessia will undergo aggressive chemotherapy, followed by a long hospital stay and months of recovery, during which she and her family will remain in isolation for her safety.

<div><strong>The Impact on The Family</strong>
</div>
<div>Along with the emotional turmoil that Alessia’s parents, Dario and Maite, have faced, there have also been countless out-of-pocket medical expenses throughout the 2 years that they have prepared for the transplant. While medical insurance will cover Alessia’s transplant, there will continue to be additional out-of-pocket expenses that the family has to prepare for. Dario and Maite have always been the most hardworking and have done their best to care for both of their daughters during this time. Aside from their multiple jobs, they also homeschool Alessia to protect her from illness, and manage numerous doctor visits, unexpected hospital admissions and emergency room visits. The appointments leading up to the transplant, follow-up appointments, and required lengthy hospital stay means that the family will need to take time away from their jobs as well as cover copayments, travel, and all other costs associated with Alessia’s care.

<div>Alessia ha estado luchando contra la enfermedad de células falciformes desde su nacimiento. A pesar de tomar medicamentos diarios desde que tenía solo 6 semanas, estos tratamientos solo ayudan a controlar sus síntomas. En los últimos dos años, la familia se ha estado preparando para este trasplante de médula ósea, lo que les da esperanza de una cura. Si bien están agradecidos de haber encontrado un donante compatible, el camino por delante es difícil.

<div>Junto con la angustia emocional que han vivido los padres de Alessia, Dario y Maite, también han tenido innumerables gastos médicos durante los dos años de preparación para el trasplante. Aunque el seguro médico cubrirá el trasplante de Alessia, seguirán existiendo gastos adicionales que la familia deberá afrontar. Dario y Maite siempre han sido extremadamente trabajadores y han hecho todo lo posible para cuidar de sus dos hijas durante este tiempo. Además de sus múltiples empleos, también educan a Alessia en casa para protegerla de enfermedades y gestionan numerosas visitas al médico, ingresos hospitalarios inesperados y visitas inesperadas a la sala de urgencias.
