Support Aisha's journey with midwives in Uganda

Birth is my passion! Why? Because beginnings matter and few events matter more than the birth day... the day a woman's life giving power reaches it's fullest potential and a new person takes it's first breath.

I've been a birthworker since 2007 and I'm currently a student midwife wrapping up midwifery training at one of the busiest birthing centers in the USA.

A few days ago I was chosen to be on the team of Village Birth International's 2020 BIPOC Midwifery Cultural Convergence (https://villagebirthinternational.org/vbi-trip/ ), a collaborative effort that links midwives of color in the USA with midwives in Uganda. This is one of several efforts to facilitate mutual midwifery learning and exchange. In January 2020, the USA team of midwives will travel to Gulu, in northern Uganda, and work with the Uganda team of midwives for 3 weeks.

This is an opportunity of a lifetime, not just to work with experienced African midwives, or to share my skills, serving Ugandan women in their childbearing year, but to further develop and evolve as a black midwife serving primarily women of color in the USA and the Caribbean.

Black women and babies in the USA have the worse maternal and infant mortality and morbidity rates of any group in the country and studies have shown that having access to culturally conscious and respectful midwifery care is necessary to shifting that narrative. I believe having access to black midwives who provide culturally conscious and respectful midwifery care is key. The BIPOC Midwifery Cultural Convergence will help me to grow as a midwife and increase my ability to better serve women of color.

The only hindrance is the cost. It'll take US$3,000 to get me there and back (airfare, accommodation and transportation, food) and, as a student midwife, I simply don't have that kind of money. So I'm reaching out to you - family, friends, acquaintances, community members - for your support. No amount is too small; no contribution is insignificant.

Your support will not only help me but will contribute to the life-saving and life-supporting efforts of the midwives in northern Uganda.

With eternal gratitude for your generosity and support!
