June 9th 1999 is a date I can't forget. Why you may ask? Because on that fateful day I was involved in a ghastly road traffic accident that should have taken my life but instead I came out of it with Spinal cord injury. I am a quadriplegic with no sensation from my chest down to my feet. Being from Nigeria, poor medical facilities and improper handling at the time of the accident did me more harm than good.
However, almost 21 years of Spinal cord injury has taken a toll on my body and my condition has taken a turn for the worse. I would love to have a better quality of life but with my parents out of a job and having other children to cater for, their finances are spread thin. A bedsore that has proven difficult (which often gets infected) for almost 3 years now has halted my ability to move around and I find myself more bedridden than ever, lying down days, weeks and months unend. With me not being ambulant and the constant lying down my bladder has given up and can no longer pass urine so I have had to start using a catheter to wee. Not only is my bladder weak, but I constantly pass out white substances in my urine which often clogs the catheter causing emergencies. All these have resulted in me needing urgent medical intervention which the hospitals in Nigeria have not been able to provide hence the need to seek medical care outside the country. A surgery, consultation with a neurosurgeon, consultation with a urologist and physiotherapy are things I urgently require.
Also, I require the use of gadgets, like the Evolv easystand to help me stand and exercise my body as well as a motorized wheelchair for easier movement and alleviation of pressure on my buttocks due to the type of cushion some of them come with, which I desperately need.
Surviving the accident up to this point was no fluke but a grand design by God because I have a whole lot to do and achieve in this life.
I intend to live to impact my world and that's why a friend suggested we open a GoFundMe campaign. My friend said something that stuck, "People will better understand you in these times when everyone has been forced to live indoors with minimal movement. They now know what it is to live without moving about".
