Hello, I am Chillin' Kabba, Innovative Extraordinaire for The Soultown Magazine.
For my birthday this year, it would mean the world to me if you could help me help those who cannot help themselves by gifting them a quarterly subscription to The Soultown Magazine. I made a promise to my ancestors in 2007 while standing in Les Maison des Esclaves (the House of Slaves) on Goree Island, off the coast of Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. I promised them that I would discover a way to tell their stories to their great, great, great, great, great-grandchildren -- to educate them about their triumphs and their struggles.
Our goal is to raise $100/wk. That takes care of 5 loved ones who will receive The Soultown Magazine for 3 consecutive months. Out of sight does not have to mean out of mind. Paying for a subscription provides a virtual community for inmates to connect. It will provide opportunities to learn about grassroots stories, unsung heroes, and community events. The best way for prisoners to do time is to read. Reading opens up access to instruction across any subject. It teaches job skills. It reminds those behind bars that a world exists beyond the cage. At the very least, reading helps improves vocabulary and literacy skills, but the benefits go beyond that for those behind bars.
